Famously accused of supplying the entire south zone of Rio with crack cocaine, Santo Amaro has a history of ruthless drug cartels battling it out in the community for the lucrative drug trade.

For residents, shootouts between the drug gang who controlled the hill against rivals cartels along with the threat of military incursions led by the infamous BOPE Special Forces were an everyday occurrence.

In late 2012 in the wake of a war between the government and the drug cartels, the Brazilian government ordered a military invasion of Santo Amaro. Led by 200 military personnel they have since occupied the community driving the drug cartels underground.

But Santo Amaro has another story, a story of hope, of community and of determination. In 1996 Marlon Sandro founded a social project in Santo Amaro to keep young kids out of trouble and away from the lure of the drug cartels. Eduardo Dantas and Hacran Dias both learned their trade here and Jose Aldo slept here when he first arrived in Rio.

HILL OF CHAMPIONS is a film about the underdog rising up against impossible odds, it's about fighting for your community and for what you believe and above all its about community and making a difference.</div>
