The wife and I took our baby girl to the doctor last week to get her twelve-month vaccination shots. Since this round of vaccinations has a live virus, Mumps measles rubella, I think, there was a chance that she would have fever anywhere up to 10 days after the shot. Well, 7 days after the shot, I got a call from daycare, and our Beth had a fever of 40.5 Celsius, or basically 105 Fahrenheit!
I took her right to emergency, the wife was out of town on business, so I had to handle this. We were texting back and forth, and she said to give her some infant Tylenol while we were waiting in emerg. Thankfully the pharmacy at the hospital is right next door. Her temperature immediately came down a bit, and after a fair bit of time in the hospital, they told us to cycle every three hours taking infant Tylenol and infant Advil.
That was all yesterday, today she's feeling much better, but seriously, I never have been this afraid my life. I would kill for my little girl, and I was barely keeping it together.
Actually I lost it once completely, when around at 4 PM when she was so exhausted and basically falling asleep on my chest, the doctor wanted an x-ray, and if you ever seen what a child needs to do to get an x-ray, or if you're a parent, you would know why I completely lost it. Imagine your tired, very sick, little one crying, and in this device.
To all the parents out there who have been through so much worse, my hats off to you. After the experience of this week, I realize I am a complete wuss, and emotionally incapable of probably handling anything actually major.
Cute kid. Sounds like everything is going to be alright. And someday she'll see that picture and laugh.

Ha ha! Sorry, that is a stock photo. I was not mentally with it enough to actually take a pic. But it pretty much was just like that....
Man those X-rays absolutely gut you. We've had to do GI specialist visits with our baby girl and they basically strap her down to a piece of plywood and turn her on a rotisserie for those. Makes you want to stab someone in the chest and run out with your baby or just burst out in tears.
One thing about the little ones is that a really high temp like that isn't as bad as if it was an adult. My daughter was getting kidney infections when she wasn't even one yet due to a bladder problem. She had a high fever like that for a week, I was a wreck. Doc's told us the high fever was common with young ones. Glad shes feeling better. Its so hard when they cant tell you what is wrong.
Not sure what it's called, couldn't find a good image of it either. It's for the upper GI test. First she had to drink enough of this pink liquid stuff that would show up on their x-ray machine thing inside her intestines. She had the stuff and her, mom, and I all ended up covered in this nasty smelling pepto bismol looking stuff.
Then to get the full picture of the x-ray they strap them down onto this plank to keep them from moving, other than screaming terribly of course. Then the thing has to rotate to give a full 3D view of the intestines or some shit. So on her back is bad enough, but then you've got to put her basically upside down hanging by the straps of this contraption screaming bloody murder while the x-ray tech looks all annoyed.
Thankfully by age 2 she outgrew everything they thought was going on. Not sure how parents with kids constantly in hospitals do it.
My first instinct when I saw that pic was to get the child out by any means possible then use whatever I had used to get the child out to beat the person that put it in there in to a state just below mental retardation but just above not knowing you're retarded.
Similar story here. First girl, 3rd child, and she somehow got a UTI which turned into a bladder infection. Other than a slight fever, she seemed totally fine. After a few days she started getting more and more lethargic. We had no idea of the internal infection and the fever just kept getting worse.
We took her to the doctor and they gave her a shot, but the infection was worse than expected. The next day she was napping on my wife's chest when she started having convulsions and her lips were turning blue. Straight back to the doctor for double shots and heavier doses for the next 3 or 4 days. We were afraid of kidney problems from all this medicine, but luckily she started getting better and better.
Fucking a, that shit is scary. Glad she is ok. Small consolation at the time I would guess, but at least you knew that a fever was a possibility after a live virus, crazy that it got that high, but babies do get higher fevers than adults can usually handle. I took my 7 week old to the hospital when he got a fever and it turned out to be meningitis and he almost died and is now severely disabled from it. There was a doctor there who I almost murdered. I'm not a lawsuit guy, but I do feel like my son was somewhat malpracticed on and that his outcome could have been a lot better if they had done things more logically than they did.
She is fabulously chunkalicious
I think for most parents, the worst thing they've ever seen their kid go through is pretty much the worst thing they have ever felt.
So on a "normal" outcome, the child has fever up to 10 days, and could possibly get dangerously sick like yours and yet most OG wonder why parents don't trust vaccines completely? Remember his baby wasn't sick BEFORE getting the vaccine!!!!
I know that when I had a shot of Twinrix last year I got 2 bouts of 10 consecutive days of total fatigue. I was a useless mess. And after the 4th day I saw forum post after forum posts of people getting the dreaded fatigue syndrome for LIFE after the 2nd or 3rd shot. Needless to say I didn't get my 2nd or 3rd shot!!! I was scared for along while that the fatigue would return. What a fun period to go through. And for what?
I'm sure just like me you felt all alone and powerless. I was stuck with my fatigue and nobody cared. Family and friends think you're overreacting. Of course nurses and doctors tried to convince me it was all coincidence and it didn't go in any documented file. Nah. It remains with only me and my little experience. Not even a data.
Fuck them all and screw all OGers that think vaccines are automatically and magically awesome and couldn't possibly have harsh side effects or that drug companies are all super humanists. The folly of it all, is that we take vaccines as preventive measures, not as treatments!
I'm glad she's ok, and sorry for the ordeal, but your baby is flipping adorable if that's any consolation.

Isn't she?!
With those fever rose cheeks lol
JonnyW -Take fevers seriously every time with young ones.

A friend of the old ladies has a 10 year old that's in a wheelchair because she waited too long to act on a fever.
