quick search shows me his a D2 national champ, which, means he isn’t a punk by any means…
there was a time when D2 national champs were allowed into the D1 tourney…
several won it, but, that has been years since it was allowed…
lots of reasons why someone would choose to go D2/3 or NAIA instead of D1…
where some real killers are is at JUCO…
lots of absolute studs in juco that either did not have the grades or maybe had some personal issues in HS that will make a coach shy away… they go to prove they are in a better spot in their lives for a couple of years and then get recruited after…
US women doing well so far. Only surprise was Adeline Gray losing in the quarters. So far all the US women are still in it. Maroulis in the semis, along with Kilty, and Hildebrant. Winchester in the finals and Page in the bronze medal match.
adeline gray is a sweetheart of a person, but, she women’s wrestling is reaching a point where you have to be a legitimate athlete to be the best nowadays…
and bless her heart, she is not very athletically gifted…
add in being a new mother of twins…
but, all the respect in the world for what she has achieved with her talents… she will continue to be an inspiration/ambassador/pick your adjective for wrestling for many many years and cemented her place in the wrestling pantheon…
One of my students was at Pedigo for a while and said Pixley was a world class wrestler. I don’t know how true it is. He also said Pixley was a dick and shitty training partner lol. He leg locked Pixley who responded by mat returning him off of the mats and into a barbell someone was deadlifting with. The story they tell is that he went D2 because of academic reasons, not wrestling reasons.
I will say I saw him roll with Devon Van Cura, who wrestled at Penn State (not a standout or all American, but a solid D1 guy) and Pixley mauled him in the standup. I like Van Cura, I was pulling for him to win that bracket. But Pixley clowned him.
I don’t think most people actually know what a world class wrestler feels like…I think my guy who met Pixley was just basing that off of Pixley being way way better than BJJ wrestlers.
I teach BJJ now in a town with a D1 wrestling college, so I’ve rolled with a lot of D1 guys. There’s a huge difference between a normal D1 guy and an all American. And a bigger jump to real world class guys…
