The closest I got to mat cleaner was being a helpful dad and mopping mats for the coach.

I Love the smell of mat cleaner. In college I had a paid gig to clean mats for my team. Twice a day I cleaned mats and monthly I got 400 bucks.

I was voted into the state chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame retiring after 30 years coaching. You get a jacket, a plaque and a ring.

What was your finishing move?

Not a big time pinner … just lots of tilts and leg turns.

Fucking awesome. Where did you coach?

I coached for six or so years and then work got in the way. I coached at Esperanza High School in Anaheim Ca and Newport Harbor hs in Newport Beach, Ca. I loved coaching. I was an assistant though. I let the head coach deal with the parents lol. I just got to
Teach my favorite sport.

Congrats on your induction. Very cool.

My son was an asst coach for a few years at a Nor Cal HS. He loved it but too time consuming for shift work.

I wrestled at SFSU out in CA in the late 90’s. I returned to South FL and became the Head Coach at Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, FL. I was Head Coach there from 2002-2008. My record was 83-17 in duals. We won the County, the District every year, the region every year but 1, and we’re the highest placing public school in our division of the State all but 1 year I was there. I had a lot of state Placewinners and a Champ or 2 along the way. It was a great experience.

Hey Gutty

I bet you know my buddy Phil Ziimolzak. He wrestled Heavyweight for SFSU in mid 90’s. He is a lawyer now. Grew
Up as rough as anyone I knew growing up and wrestling made his life better. He pinned a Stanford HW to secure a dual win for SFSU.

Congrats on your coaching achievements.

**he was done wrestling before I got there but I knew who he was. I met him a few times at some wrestler stuff. He was super nice guy. Wasn’t too interested in the wrestling g at that point. He was more into his Fraternity by then. Good guy though.

Forgot to mention, if you still speak with him, please let him know our Coach passed away and his Memorial is at SFSU this month. Maybe Phil is still I. The area and wants to attend.

I’m sorry to hear that. May he Rest In Peace. Haven’t talked to Phil in many years. We worked out together in college and High School.

No I went to Cal State Bakersfield but grew Up Wrestling with him in HS . He was at Savannah and I was at Esperanza ( a few miles apart) but our coaches were friends so we worked out a lot and in the off season wrestled for same clubs. Then when he was at Cypress college I would go
In and wrestle with him and my best Friend. Phil was always a funny dude so we got along well. He had it rough growing up and dealt with it through humor. I did the same.
