36 to old?

is that to old to start judo? i always hear how judo is really tough on the body .How does someone my age avoid the injuries ,,Is it worth the risk? 36 will be 37 in november

I started when I was 37. 40 now. Last time I was on the mat I was in high school wrestling. I feel it was the best thing I did to start doing judo. Its helped me in other aspects of my life. I am so much happier person since I started judo. I am lucky in that I have a great club that I practice at where I feel safe working out with very technical players. But that being said, you can get hurt. I'm just coming off a six month injury so yes you can get hurt. Freaky accident, don't think that it could happen again. But I knew before I stepped on the mat that injury was possible. Put the injuries in perspective though. If you played pickup basketball or soccer as consistantly as you were doing judo you could get hurt as well.

As far as avoiding injuries, you have to remember that you are not 18. Take it slow, don't rush it. Think of it as a marathon not a sprint. Really learn breakfalls. I think its the most underrated skill to have. Also, get to know who you are practicing with. Some hardcore, testosterone pumping 20 year olds might be good to stay clear until you feel more comfortable on the mat. People who leave their ego at the door are best to work out with.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

ttt

i dont plan on competeing, its just the more i see guys sparring the more i wanna do it and i think i wouldnt mind the pain, i might even like it ,,i dunno i'll see and ill let you guys know how it goes if i do take it up

jllamas, fwiw, I'm 40 and I started Judo a little over four months ago (with absolutely no martial arts background at all). It's been quite an eye-opening experience. Yup, I've got pain in numerous places, (sore ribs, two slightly sprained ankles) but fortunately nothing major yet. With that said, it has been a GREAT experience and I'm so glad I did it. I'm also fortunate to have some very good teachers, so that helps quite a bit too. I also agree very much with the statement Greenhornet made above...."Some hardcore, testosterone pumping 20 year olds might be good to stay clear until you feel more comfortable on the mat. People who leave their ego at the door are best to work out with." Go slow and don't rush things, IMHO.....

Never too old. Nastula started mma at a bit younger age.
