On Saturday April 30th, 2011 Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) MMA Officials Trainer Kevin MacDonald will be conducting a one day ABC recognized MMA Referee Training Course. The course will be held in Portland, ME. At the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel beginning at 9am. The ABC is recognized in all states where MMA is sanctioned and is also recognized by Tribal Commissions across North America.( http://abcboxing.com/ )
The Referee Training Course is a full day of instruction (8+ hours) which includes powerpoint presentation, video analysis, question and answer discussion, scenario training, and “in the cage” positioning instruction. Students will be provided with a training manual which covers all topics taught in the course. Topics covered include appearance, how to conduct an effective rules meeting, properly starting and ending a bout, media concerns, judgment calls, proper positioning, and communication. Rules, regulation, and proper enforcement of such will be discussed in detail. An exam will be given at the end of the day to ensure that all who successfully complete the course have a strong working knowledge of the job and expectations of a professional MMA referee. The exam will consist of 2 sections, written and practical. The practical portion will involve the referee candidate applying submissions in a controlled environment to demonstrate proficiency and understanding of basic submission mechanics. A list of submissions that will be used on the exam will be furnished upon receipt of completed application.
Immediately following the course participants will be provided premium seats at Cage Fighting Extreme’s “The Maine Event”. This is the first sanctioned MMA event in the state of Maine. Here they will be able to shadow professional referees at a live event, ask questions, and gain valuable real show experience. Attendance to the fights is not required for the course but strongly recommended.
Students who successfully complete the Referee Training Course will be given a Certificate of Completion for documentation and, if state regulations permit, students may be invited to further shadow professional referees at live MMA event(s). After passing the Referee Training Course and shadowing referees at a live event(s), referee candidates will have the tools necessary to step into the cage under supervision to gain invaluable, real bout experience.
The cost for this full day course of instruction is $250*.
This course will be limited to ten (10) participants and will be filled based on the first 10 completed applications received. To receive an application, please send an email to: refereekevin@yahoo.com
Successful completion of this course in no way guarantees licensure in any state rather is it the first step toward licensure.
A strong working knowledge of all facets of Mixed Martial Arts is strongly encouraged. Participants will be given a list of terms and maneuvers to be familiar with in advance.
There will be many extras included in the cost which will be announced over the coming days.
