If You are 140lb and won GQ novice no gi/Whitebelt and WhiteBelt Absolute this weekend?
maybe you should try the beginner division and see how you do,if you can win with the sandbagging it would be ok
140 lbs and won the absolute? You could very well be a blue belt with skills like that. Congrats.
No other competitors?
Yes
Anything below 1 year is too soon unless you have wresling,Judo or SW experience from before.
You have to put in the time.
If you are really talented and train 5-6 times a week i can see someone getting the blue in 1 year,no problem..
Otherwise it should be around 1,5 - 3 years ,depending on the skills, talent, and how much you train.
I don't think there should be any time limit. If you have the skills you should have the belt. It took me 2,5 years of training 5 times a week to get my blue. Then we had a very good wrestler who got his in 3 months. I think this is fair and it keeps the blue belt being an achievement.
You can't but times on these things, it's just arbitrary.
Some people are just talented.
I got my really fast, I wasn't ready for it IMO but having it put a bullseye on my back. It made me work twice as hard to make sure I deserved to wear it. When I left my first school I went to one of the top schools in the USA and was tapping guys out and holding my own with guys who had been training for 2-3 years and had their purples.
So, it doesn't matter when you get it as long as you can back it up. If you are rolling with blues and tapping some (the newer ones) and holding your own against the ones who are close to purple you have earned you belt.
There are many factors involved
Training partners
How often you train
Teacher
Prevoious background
Talent
Will
etc
I think Roy Harris got his blue belt really quick (I could be wrong but less than 2 months?) and BJ became one of the worlds best black belts in less than 4 years.
I think one of the main reasons why it takes time to get good in bjj are the teaching methods. They are at most schools (not all) not very good.
I had come from a Judo background and had done some bjj informally with a buddy (who is purple or damn close). I got my blue in 7 mths.
Yeah, got mine in 7 months, then 2 1/2 years later--purple.
No, not at all.
So, you don't trust your instructor's decision you come here to get validation?
Give me a fucking break. I got my Blue in seven months from my instructor, a Gracie Barra BB. Should I have told him no thank you, it's too soon?
It's diffrent for everyone. If you train under a reputable instructor, his decision to promote should be good enough...
KipDynamite is correct
When your instrucors promotes you then you are ready..
Yea its the first belt not the first stripe ..
Just because its the first belt you should get it fast, fuck that.
Everybody have their own criteria for the belts....
First belt is the most important belt where you are supposed to have solid basics..
If your basics have a lot of holes when ou get the blue belt ,its gonna be hard to progress to purple
You have to drill the basics until you puke - just my opinion...After you get the blue belt ,you are spending less and less time on the basics because the game gets more complex...Basics rules..
PS: Yes i know that when you are a black belt then your basics are really good
way too many variables to say one way or another...one thing is certain...if you are a training "open-minded" judoka you will advance quicker than someone off the street. this is coming from a whitebelt in bjj, so take my opinion with a grain of salt...john
Took me 2.5 years to earn a blue belt...then again, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed!
who gives a shit what he won? if he doesnt know a scissor sweep, front collar choke, americana etc etc then theres no way he should be a blue belt. belt should be awarded based on knowledge of bjj amassed.
Kipdinamite said: "So, you don't trust your instructor's decision you come here to get validation" What the fuck are you talking about? Next time Just answer the post and dont assume you know why the question was asked. Me and my friend watched as this kid he knows won all those divisions and he felt he should get his Blue and I felt its to soon to say. Who knows how his Instructor feels?
Usurper Thats pretty much what i was saying to my friend..
I got mine after 3 months.
