Well, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Outside the available technology, most of the ideas in 1984 were based on true events in Russia during Stalin’s reign. I was always impressed with Orwell’s imagination until I read the Gulag Archipelago. The first few chapters describing the criminal code could easily replace the underlying policies outlined in 1984 without changing the book much.
