I've seen it a few times, and I completely agree.  It's one of the movies I give as an example of Deniro not playing Robert Deniro playing a character, if that makes any sense.  His performance is one of the best of his career, imo.

Saw it years ago, badass flick from what I remember. Spanish Conquistador/slaver who kills his own brother, then fights against his own people to save natives as his redemption.
