A realistic McCorkle assessment

I just want to make the disclaimer that I am a big fan of McCorkle's quick wit and personality. I think his honesty and brash personality are a nice change of pace from the mindless, robotic fighters littering the UFC roster.

However, looking at his skillset he has very little chance of making a real impact on the UFC's heavyweight division. Sure at 6'7" and 265+ he strikes an imposing figure. But, aside from size and a powerful kimura, he brings little to the table. At this point it's safe to say that his standup is nonexistant. In fact, he has admitted as much in the past. While he was able to get a nice takedown on Struve his wrestling looks to be average. His BJJ seems to be limited to diving for kimuras and little else. He was easily swept and seemed to have little interest in getting back to his guard when Struve had him mounted.

With his size he might be able to overcome all of these shortcomings if he had heart but what I saw last night was somebody who performs well when he does the bullying but when the tables turn he looks for a way out. I am hoping that he has more to offer than what he showed last night. The whole Carwin freeze up excuse is getting old because these are professional athletes who have competed in the Octagon before. My advice to McCorkle would be to work your boxing nonstop and learn how to use that 81-inch reach to your advantage.

Hope this helps. Good luck McCorkle

He's not one of the best heavyweights in the world....no shame in that. My advice to Sean is this: make as much money as you can and enjoy the ride.

He's the same dude that's in those wack 90s "white men can't jump" pics. He did well to get in the UFC but would probably have done even better in Japan where the "giant" gimmick still terrifies and amazes them. He'll beat all of the jason guidas, some of the joey beltrans and none of the Cain Velasquezez IMO

Just because a person has competed in the octagon before, in no way keeps pressure from taking hold. This is one of the things that separates the very best from the very good (dealing with pressure) and its NOT a common trait to be able to deal with massive amounts of it easily.

As for the rest of your assessment, since every single A-hole the guy knows is going to be telling him "what he should work on" I think you should have saved the effort.

seems like too much too soon.

he had an impressive debut but to go from prelim to co-main event is a lot to put on a guy.

Was he ever in trouble during the 3 round fight with the seperated shoulder or was he using his size to maul a much smaller, lesser skilled fighter. I haven't seen the fight you're referring to but its easy to push through when you're winning. However, it is a lot more difficult when you're taking punishment.

The correct analysis is that he's relatively new to the sport, new to top competition, and has a whole shitload to learn

It has never been more complicated than that. Even the best MMA fighters have lost several times. Sean will bounce back. It's honestly better that he lost this fight anyways because it will help nurture the kind of improvements it takes to get where he wants to go

i will be interested in how he comes back from this. this could be a real opportunity for him to bounce back and show he is more than just a guy who got a shot based on persona and someone who actually should be in there

let's not kid ourselves here. That was the weakest, most undeserving co-main event in history

come on people be honest to your self..
if mccorkle woudnt be a ug superstar ..everybody would give him hell here..
so take of your mccorklefanboy-sunglasses and for fucks sake be honest to your self..

excellent shittalker?..yah
skilled fighter?.. nah

It looked like he just didnt want to get hit.  Struve hit him with a hammer fist from the bottom and it looked like it caught him off guard.  Similar to the issues Brock had when he was hit.

You guys are assholes... it was his second fight, first fight in the UFC with a guy that had momentum behind him.

He was also the Co-Main event in front of 23,000 live for the first time. Thats a hell of a place to be, most of you couldnt even speak in front of that many people let alone put your ass on the line against a guy that has more experience and faced better competition. Dont be so quick to hate on a guy, we are all brothers and should help build the guy back up instead of kicking him while hes down.

Im a Oracle fan, he is one of us regular guys that got to the big show, where most of us wish we could be. Show some support and quit being an asshole.

lol @ the haters.....the dude is just having a good time..thats all.

was it actually a co-main event?

Man some of you are so pessimistic. Fighters can always improve with the right training, no need for him to just accept having mediocre stand up and what not. I thought he fought hard and have a lot of respect for that.

Bottom line is the dude has won a fight in the UFC. What % of guys who fight can make that claim? Seems like he's just enjoying the ride. Props to him for taking the opportunity and doing his best. No shame in losing to a young improving fighter

did the OP watch the last strikeforce? benji radach turtled up for about 3 rounds basically...

i'm not saying mccorkle could have come back, or that the reffing is better in strikeforce (it should have been stopped)

...but... i don't think it should have been stopped quite that quickly... especially given his early dominance

...it is hard to see him being competitive with the likes of cain or brock though... and he's not super young where he has another 15 years to learn or something...

seeing reggie warren come out with him was so friggin awesome though... i don;t care of he won or lost... just cool that someone like him is out there... giving it back to the fans

Anarkis2 - McCorkle just got too pumped before the fight. He looked tense in his corner like a caged animal. He needed to relax.

Running your mouth alot before a fight in by far the biggest venue of your career can do that to a man. As I said before, I am sure he is getting "advice" from every single person he knows today, and probably from the kid bagging his groceries as well. ONly think I would offer, is dont talk before a fight, it adds too much to an already high pressure situation.

He's estimated to be anywhere from 34-37. His hourglass is definitely running low so I see little chance of him shoring up his weaknesses. Given his limited skillset I would favor Kimbo and Hoger against him at this point. However, he will still hulksmash Jason Guida and Tiny Norton. Phone Post
