I was really enjoying the Justin Wilcox vs JZ fight last night up until that eye poke, and it got me thinking again about an idea I had. There's always going to be a problem with open handed gloves, but I was wondering if there was a solution where we could develop a glove that covered the tips of the fingers and kept them all together like a speed bag glove. We would still have to worry about the thumb, but I think it could prevent at least some of the eye pokes from open hand pushes.
What I was thinking was a thin leather cover for the 4 fingers with some elastic on the sides so that it could spread out a bit to adjust grip. I don't think it would hinder grappling too much if done properly, and it might even help because it would provide traction when gripping that bare sweaty fingers wouldn't.
We obviously have a real problem with the gloves the way they are, and I haven't heard anyone come up with any solutions. I think this might work.
What say ye, UG?
I'm with ye Joe. Good idea.
Damn you must have just wake n baked comming up with that. Elastics... crazy but maybe it could work.
Shooto gloves would be a good suggestion
As a grappler, I do not approve of this idea. I like the gloves how they are.
Joe, look up the vibram 5 fingers. It's a shoe that simulates barefoot walking.
If something like this can be turned into a glove it would greatly mitigate the pokes.
Joe i know you're busy....i'll go ahead and patent this product now and take it off your hands.
How about goggles?

I'm not sure that would help, because you would still have covered individual fingers to stick in someone's eyes.
Is Joe trolling us?
Out of curiosity, how many fights get stopped for other reasons? Nut shots or whatever. Is eye poking really so rampant that we need to change the gloves? I'd be interested to see UFC stats.

Diamond MMA might very well have a solution for nut shots. They have a special cup with a pair of compression shorts that keep everything in place. They're sending me over one to try, and they're very confident about their product. I'm looking forward to trying it out, and if it works I'm going to promote it as much as possible.

Nutshots suck but they are more an annoyance than a true problem. Detached retinas could end careers so it actually is a problem that will have to get dealt with eventually
So really this was a thread to promote DiamondMma lol

Brian Foster just lost a testicle to a nut shot in the gym. I would have to say that's a bit more than an annoyance.
Safety Goggles fix the eye poke situation.
Eye pokes generally happen with the Thumb, pointer, or pinky fingers. Why not have some vulcan neck pinch gloves? That would maintain enough dexterity for the grapplers and submission guys.
I think it's worth looking into. I also think guys are a little intentional with eye pokes. (ex. Shields vs gsp). Maybe not always deliberate but aren't trying not to either. I always feel bad for guys getting poked in the eye. That's one part of your body that u don't want to fuck with.
Gloves are fine how they are. Start closing your fists when throwing strikes instead of finger jabs.
I think anything that kept the fingers together is a start.

Did he have any cup on? If not, that sucks for him. Otherwise, the current lineup of junk protection seems to work for most situations. And Shock Doctor already has compressions shorts with a cup in them.
As for the gloves, that would be up to the grapplers to test. Shouldn't be too hard for Dana to make a few calls and have some companies work up prototypes. Something does need to be done. In the gym it just sucks for you. In a fight it sucks for everyone.

Goggles. They were good enough for Kareem Abdul Jabbar. You wouldn't hit a man with glasses would you? Lol
