Academy Owners - Which Mats?

Im looking at buying new academy mats, around 1000 SF.  I prefer the tatami style.

What did you guys get and how did you like the product/service?  What thickness did you get?  Im in Canada FWIW and am thinking this is going to cost me around 10 grand.  Thanks.

follow up question: am I crazy for buying white mats?

Don’t buy white mats.  They show scuff marks and all kinds of dirt and hair

dollumar works best.

Thickness depends on subflooring

Also if you ever film any video in an all white academy it will look shit

I have white mats- I like the look, but hard to remove markings and stuff.

If I could do it over again, I would go with grey mats.

I also have Dollamur 2" flexiroll mats, and everyone seems to like it. However, I know my teacher likes his Zebra mats the most…Dollamur’s are cheaper and way easier to install and you will save a ton on shipping costs.

great info thanks.  I love the tatami classic mats but if dollamur is much cheaper Id consider it.  Thanks

Dollamur also price matches- so call up other less expensive roll out mat places and get their quotes- ie. Tiffin mats.

Throwing, wrestling, dollamur is the best and cheapest. White looks cool but hard to keep clean and stain free. Colored gis mess them up.  All black is the best but we've also had Grey and blue that seemed to work the best.

excellent advice thank you

I like tht dollamur has the tatami pattern option.

I love tatami mats but if I can get em cheaper in a roll out Im down!

Make sure you get a platform style floor if you want to have judo practice as well.

I really want those white Dollamurs. Nothing compares to that look inside aoj. Is it really that difficult to clean?

Do you have any advice about how to do this correctly and affordably? Feel free to PM or post here - thank you!

I’ve never done this one, but it seems to make a great deal of sense to me:

Yup, that looks pretty standard. It still hurts when taking throws from someone, but not nearly as much as when using tatami mats laid down on concrete

Check out Mcbryde Mats out of Texas. Relatively new company, really good prices. We just redid our gym and are happy with them. We're in Canada too, for what it's worth.
