Alex Chambers on Invicta FC Debut

Had a chat with her last week. Looking forward to seeing what she does in her Invicta fight. Should be another great addition to the card!

When Alex Chambers (3-1) tore through experienced MMA vet Mika Nagano (11-8) at the Brace For War all female event back in October 2012, her name was thrown into the spotlight as a dominant force on the Australian WMMA circuit.

After her highlight reel finish, it was revealed that Chambers went into the fight with Nagano battling an illness, true to her fighting spirit, Chambers still continued to compete but the fact that she was sick still laid in the back of her mind, “I really just wanted to go in there and get it over with,” she laughed. “I was on antibiotics before the fight and really didn’t feel too good,” she explained. It took all of about fourty-two seconds for Chambers to win the fight and that was the very moment that many say sealed her chances of being signed by Invicta FC.

On her signing to the premier Women’s MMA organization, Chambers was excited, “I was so happy to hear the news that they were looking to sign me, it all just seemed like the right time for me.” After the news broke that Chambers was signed it didn’t take long for her first fight to be announced on the stacked Invicta 5 card, which is set to take place on the 5th of April. She is scheduled to face off with undefeated prospect Jodie Esquibel (3-0) who trains out of the esteemed gym – Jacksons MMA.

Many would see the match-up to be in the favour of Esquibel, however Chambers doesn’t see this fight to be different to any other fight, “each fighter presents a new challenge and to be honest I don’t know too much about her. I watched her fight on the last Invicta card and was thinking how good her fight was, and what a good fighter she is, and now I get to fight her,” Chambers laughed.

A common opinion on Australian based fighters is that their main weakness inside the cage is that of their wrestling ability, when asked of this weakness Chambers was quick to answer, “as a fan of MMA you always hear that it’s a problem in Australian fighters, I don’t think it is going to be a problem for me. I am lucky to have a great gym where we have great coaches in all areas of the sport. I am just going to focus on improving my strengths and working on my weaknesses.” On the fight itself Chambers was confident in her approach, “I am just going to go out there and look for the finish,” she exclaimed.

The support of the coaches and training partners from her gym, VT-1 in Sydney is something that Chambers certainly does not take for granted, “I am lucky to have such a great team behind me. I have such great coaches and awesome training partners,” she explained. Sponsors such as Tussle Fight Gear and Level Clothing have helped Chambers in realizing her dream of making it to the “big show” of WMMA and without their support she certainly wouldn’t have been able to compete in the sport that she loves.

The stacked Invicta 5 card is guaranteed not to disappoint, and with Chambers in the company of fellow Aussie’s, Bec Hyatt and Fiona Muxlow, we are sure to see some entertaining fights from some fighters who love to leave it all in the cage!

It'd be a great start if she got a highlight reel knockout like the one against Mika. That was brutal.

TTT and in for more pics. Phone Post
