Was he just trying to plagiarize some brownie points from a teacher by claiming to build a clock?
 
Did he purposely build a device that he thought might incite some kind of over-reaction from the school in order to generate some sort of sympathy, a lawsuit, or similar?
 
Or it is something else entirely?
 
I do think its a little weird that he decided to build a clock inside of a case.  It's kind of a shitty clock if you have to open a case to look at it.  To me it looks kind of like something you would see in a b-movie movie as a 'bomb' prop or an imitation bomb a kid would build.
