ammy mma

does anyone have any info on when ammy mma is going to get approved?
I've heard some rumors, but dont really know what to believe at this point.
we have a cage and are anxious to hold events at our school...

Amatuer MMA has already officially been approved by the FL Boxing Commission.

when was it approved?
anybody holding any events?

nevermind, I found out from ISKA that it is now approved.
I have a brand new 20 ft hexagon and am looking to hold an ammy event in sept at our school in sanford

very cool

check the rules... heard theres ALOT of dumb ones.

I'm only seeing the pro mma rules on the boxing commission website.
I'm getting a packet from ISKA with all the rules.

do you know any specifics?

Last I saw there were NO strikes to the head when on the ground. Only body shots. That's the biggest drawback, I think. I also think there was something about a standing 8 count? Hope those have changed.

wow, no strikes to the head...really?
and how would a standing 8 work with mma? that would be strange.

well, I'll just have to wait till I get the rules from ISKA.

As soon as I do, I'll post em up.

I wonder if headgear will be required...

Jus call it a Smoker @ your school... P.S DON'T charge for seatting that's where you get caught...

Go to Georgia for Ammy's

those are all the same as GA ammy or at least what they were. now ga has adv ammy where u can strike to the head on the ground and i think they finally did away with the standing 8 count. so they are making progess it seems.

Hopefully Florida will change the rules in time . How can you have fighters who are amateurs so they are in the process of learning the sport not be able to hit to the head on the ground. Many of them will have very liitle in their arsenal regarding submission attempts on the ground so what is this fight going to look like on the ground, I have a strong feeling it will be for the most part very ugly to watch . Standing 8 counts ? This does not look like MMA to me.

Is anyone in Central Florida planning on hosting any ammy fights soon?

Sept. 17 at the Ritz in Ybor, will be our third amateur show, last two have been Muay Thai but this will be MMA!!! Finally! Submit fighter info to fighters@aofmma.com, take care.

Thanks for the info..... I just sent you an email.

Fron the ISKA website dated July 14, 2010.

More than two years after our original proposal, the Florida legislature and state athletic commission signed off last Wednesday on the final approval for amateur mixed martial arts. A lot of credit has to go to Florida State Athletic Commission director Tom Molloy, assistant director Christa Patterson and ISKA State director John Morrision for their commitment and persistant effort in support of this project. The ISKA rules, regulations and policies have been officially adopted by the state according to the design specified as approvable by Mr. Molloy. Promoters interested in hosting amateur MMA events in Florida may contact us at schafriska@aol.com

There will also be an amatuer show in Winter Haven on August 28, 2010 as "Rumble in the Dome" returns. This show was one of the oldie but goodies from WAAAY back in the day before the state outlawed our sport and a few years before sanctioning.

Okay, so i have a question for you...since you seem to have been around this for a while.

I've heard you can have a "smoker" event at your gym that is not sanctioned, so long as you do not charge entry.

Does this include having sponsors for your event? Or selling food and drinks?
In other words, there are other ways to make money at events other than ticket sales...

And, do the "smokers" go by the same fight rules as a sanctioned event would be?

If we ever did this, we would want it to be legal.
So, my question is, what does the state of florida see as "okay" and what do they see as "illegal"

I'd refer you to the boxing commission on that one for a firm answer but my guess is that they wouldn't allow it. You'd have to check with them though to be sure but I'd be willing to place money that they'd say no.

I will do that.
I'm just wondering how they distinguish between a bunch of guys "training" in the cage in the gym and an "organized fighting event".
when I find out, I'll post up
