Another annoying daylight savings side effect

I do suicide assessment for youth.  I average 2 calls a day.  Whenever we change time forward or back my calls increase significantly for two weeks.   Today I'm at 6 calls and i have 10 more hours on shift.

Same shit in novermber when we do it.

When is this stupid bullshit going to end

So your telling me because we have less or more light out kids are picking those hours to kill themselves because of it?

Do have mixed feelings on daylight saving. But we probably should make best use of daylight in summer, is it really less effort changing all the timetables than moving the clocks? Maybe we do have the less bad solution :-/

People that REALLY piss me off are those in England who want to keep British summertime all year round. I suspect some think that not moving the clocks would actually get them more daylight, sigh. And it is quite prestigious for a country to host the Greenwich meridian, but they think we should never actually use Greenwich mean time? Grrr.

Erm sorry just wanted a little rant about that. Carry on now.

I can't understand a word you're saying. Your accent is to backwoods British.

Interesting. Why though?

So, do you have a rational behind this? Is it just because its a change, like it may be that extra little bump to push someones mood / psyche an extra step towards thinking about suicide?

They lose the hour of sleep and that pushes them over the edge, so to speak?

It's likely kids that already have a history of it and don't deal well with change.

Spring ahead gives me an extra hour of sunlight to take advantage of cheaper twilight tee times to get a full round of golf in.

Love it!

It's about sleep disturbance.  People are more irritable and have less defenses available.  Combine that with people who have bipolar disorder who are already on the edge of mania, and these kinds of disturbances push them over the edge

spring is also when most suicides occur.  It is not during the holidays like most believe.  So it's not sunlight related

beyond that, suicide is contagious.  Once we see one, whether it's in the family, in the area, or a celebrity in the news, then we see a cluster at that time

But then what is the reasoning for the same jump in november when they are getting an extra hour of sleep?

I believe that

It has not been bad this time but I'm amazed at how such a minor change in our internal time clock can throw me and lot of people off for a few weeks! So suicidal people... it won't help them.

And yeah, stop that useless shit already. Ridiculous.

It is bullshit. It was created to "save energy" during the world wars. But there is no significant study to show it actually helped. It is outdated and irrelevant. It really needs to go the fuck away.

As someone who has insomnia and depression changing your normal sleep cycle at all makes insomnia worse. Insomnia and depression can very often feed off each other.
