Chaminade coach resigns after sending 'racial' text
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Assistant Chaminade University basketball coach Mike Mathey resigned today, four days after mistakenly sending a text with a racial slur to one of his players.
The text contained a racial slur associated with African-Americans and was sent to an African-American player. Mathey allegedly said the problem with the team was that there were too many "Niggers" on the roster.
Mathey joined Head Coach Eric Bovaird at Chaminade this summer after Bovaird was hired from West Liberty University in Tridelphia, W.V. Mathey played for Bovaird at the school and was a four-year letterman and 1,000-point scorer before signing to play pro basketball in Germany.
We will have statements from Bovaird and Athletic Director Bill Villa when they are available.
