That poor kid's neck...

This is just me spitballing, but catch legimitately seems harder on the body than BJJ does.

look at the boyscouts article, they're crucifixing and neck strapping. it's good for them, they'll have 19" necks before they're 16 years old

And a short Billy Wicks instructional. Wicks was trained by henry kohlen, who in turn was trained by farmer burns. Burns had a large part in adding the finishing holds of jiudo and the handa newaza match style jiu jitsu into cacc. Billy has passed on but believe his student johnny huskey still runs their class in Asheville, NC. Asheville was the site of count komas academy for a good while in 1905 also

Wow, there was some great stuff in there. I wish the camera work was better.

From 1912,

http://www.survivorlibrary.com/library/wrestling-catch_as_catch_can_style_1912.pdf

that's a good little book, it's from much earlier though, the 1906 and 1912 are just the spaulding reprints. The book is originally from 1892', this is an add for it from the january 1894 issue of physical education. The only reason i point this out is because some noob will see it, file it away and then trot it out as fact later. It's better to cut this kind of thing off at knees before it takes on a life of its own

1893-6-1

and a scan from my 1910 black cover spaulding reprint for comparison, lest i be accused of being a lying rapscallion

A lot of catch that I’ve seen is like this. Painful holds and moves, but what’s the point? In this situation, I’d rather take the back and go for the choke.

Ghost of Farmer Burns is still around.

Jody Malenko is one of the younger guys. Karl Gotch always claimed that jody was unbeatable on the ground. Not sure if he's currently active or not. He's a pharmacist so didn't have to rely on prowrestling to make a living

Tony must count as an old time guy by now ...

i'm glad to see you've recovered from the trauma that "Once upon a time in Hollywood" inflicted on your sheltered jkd sensibilities, enough to resume posting at least. I was afraid you were going to be in a dark place while trying to deal with tarantinos' bogus propaganda bullshit, which rings as hollow as the sound and the fury of one hand clapping along to earth, wind and fires' greatest hits

Lol thanks. It was a long dark journey but I made it through to the other side thanks to Matt Furey's Farmer Burns course.

and fujiwara of course, his instructional tape set from 93', along with schalles set from the 80's set some wheels in motion. wheels within wheels.

One of the newer guys, billy scott, has a gym somewhere in that vast terra incognito known as greater kain-tuck-eeee

Awesome, thanks. I know about Schalles college wrestling credentials but as far as his catch, was he a student of Billy Robinson? If not where did he learn the catch side of things from?

One reason is that getting thrown on mats on concrete leads to a lot of pain. In Japan, they have purpose built spring floors underneath the tatami. It’s built professionally based on scientific studies compression/decompression, etc.  In the US, they often have to share space with wrestling or BJJ schools with either wrestling mats, or cheaper puzzle mats. Even with proper tatami, there is only concrete underneath.

Good deal! i was standing in solidarity with you thru the grotesque ordeal, all the while humming "one tin soldier" by coven.

The farmer burns course might have helped a little, but you really needed the psycho cybernetics course from the grandmaster of the internet
