Anybody suffered from jones fracture??

Long story short I fractured the 5th metatarsal in my foot training in Thailand last November....was slowly healing up and was told I could train by the physio until i saw the orthopaedic surgeon (had to wait 3 weeks) and during that time rolled my ankle again n aggravated it. Saw the surgeon finally and he has opted not to operate and wants to c if it will heal over the next 8 weeks!

It's been nearly 4 months now so I'm a little frustrated and am due over in Thailand in June then fighting back at home after that...but all might be off if this thing doesn't heal! In the meantime I'm barley training n using a bone stimulator 3 times a week! Anybody else been through this?? Supposedly it's notorious for slow or non healing Phone Post 3.0

I have done the rehab for several athletes with Jones fractures. They are known to be very slow healing injuries. If you go the non-surgical route, you definitely do not want to rush things.

Was yours displaced or non-displaced to start? I don't know the specifics of the degree of your fracture, etc, but still am surprised that the physio released you for training prior to seeing the ortho.

The bone stimulator should help, but it isn't going to speed the recovery that much. I have always recommended to supplement with vitamin D and calcium to support the bone growth/healing. Other than that, try to limit any excessive loading of the foot to just allow the bone to settle and heal effectively.

Thanks for the reply! No my fracture wasn't displaced at all n still in perfect alignment! I got X-rays a few days before I reinjured it n the fracture had filled in quite a bit and during that time I had just been using the bone stim but when I reinjured it it pretty much went back to square one! Up until I saw the ortho (last Friday) I had been on crutches n in a boot but he told me not to use that stuff n "ease" my way back into training! Yea I've been using a lot of vitamin d/ calcium tablets! Any suggestion on the dose??? I'm basically taking training very easy n doing mostly conditioning workouts until the 8 week mark is up Phone Post 3.0

Dosing will vary based on your current levels. If you wanted a blanket recommendation, I always say it is safest to follow what the bottle says.

I would be very cautious with easing into the training and avoid any significantly high impact activity. Your approach seems well thought out though.

I had one. I was not displaced and took a long time to heal. Just when it was starting to feel better(7 months) I rebroke it on a run in Nicaragua with a friend.

Thanks guys....I still feel like surgery is the best option but I guess ill have to wait b c what happens!

Cduek did u get the op before you fractured it or let it heel naturally?? Also what did u do the 2nd time to fix it?? Phone Post 3.0

Hey fellas just an update I got the op last Thursday! Had an intermedulary screw inserted and I'm told by the surgeon I should be back to full operation in around 3 months! Anybody had any experiences with this??? Phone Post 3.0

Sorry for the late reply, no I didn't get the op. My Dr wanted it as well as I but the surgeon said no. I was a full year before I could run or even go for long walks without it bothering me.

cdueck -

No problems! I was in the same situation I originally fractured it in November last year and saw one surgeon in march who wanted to wait 8 weeks (even though it had been fractured and had not improved in 4 months) after speaking to my physio and thinking about it I decided to c a 2nd surgeon who pretty much opted straight for it (he's very sports orientated and deals with a lot of top athletes here In Australia). How is yours now?? Phone Post 3.0

I spent a year fuckin with rehab

Finally had surgery- 3 weeks later I was like new money.

Should've had it sooner - wasted a year of my life going through the motions Phone Post 3.0

My surgery was 2 and a half weeks ago...and not allowed to walk for another 3 weeks but I don't mind as long as this shit heals properly! I knw how u feel...I tried rehab n messed around for almost 5 months before the surgery Phone Post 3.0

Yeah man after the surgery the only time it gives me trouble is if I wear my boots that are a tad too narrow. Those days it gets tender. But otherwise I'm 100% now. Phone Post 3.0

Are you very physically active?? I'm just worried that perhaps the amount of training I do could affect it! Thanks for your feedback anyways tho sir I really appreciate it! I've gone through so much cuntyness with this injury so I'm really paranoid about it not healing Phone Post 3.0
