Chengdu's a strange city. The movie Rush Hour was huge there and the city passed a bill to import Make African refugees. Now they duo up with random Chinese guys and walk around doing random government jobs like meter maid, postal work, etc. So anywhere you go it feels like the set of Rush Hour. It's well known.

How's the smog?
I was there in 98. Had to spend a few days there while I got paperwork sorted out for travel to Tibet. Average Chinese city. Dirty. Noisy. A number of really badly translated tourist signs and banners. Definitely check out the panda breeding and research center. It rare to be able to get up so close to them. I had a few girls try and get me to go dancing. I heard a few stories about that so I stayed clear.

lived in Shenzhen for work and traveled a bit, spent little time there, its a major city like Shenshen. The food is quite good but I feel that way about most of China. except for beef products.
