Anyone here ever broken a lateral epicondyle?

I snapped the same thing (elbow) in a grappling tournament. I recommend physical therapy and plenty of ice cream for your daughter :)

For me, it was a pretty quick healing injury, I got back to training in 6 weeks... But her elbow will pop and move/look strange for a while.

I wish your daughter a speedy recovery, chocolate al is a classic :) Phone Post

Thanks, Trent. We'll definitely be looking into physio. Phone Post

Troll thread. A "lateral epicondyle"???  Dinosaurs don't even exist bro.

(Best wishes for a speedy!)

I knew I should have called it the tyrannasaurus majoris bone. Phone Post

oh man, I would be a basket case!
Hope everyone is OK.

Hoping she heals quickly Mike. All the best.

Thanks, guys. Abby is home stuck on the sofa since she runs the risk of rolling over on (and torquing) the arm. Every bump in the car hurts, so even taking her through the Dairy Queen drive-thru for a break is out of the question.

She skipped a dose of morphine today because she was feeling a bit better, but soon regretted the decision as her pain level skyrocketed. She has a really high pain tolerance from a bout with osteomilitis (bone infection) she went through a few years ago in her leg. I honestly think she's more frustrated with the dizziness, her lack of mobility and discomfort level with the huge cast and pins through her skin than anything. She broke down crying this afternoon,  begging me, "Please Daddy, just cut the cast off. I can't stand it any more." That sucked pretty bad.

Every time she starts crying, I bring her a few buldog pupies to take her mind of things. It works pretty well.

We have to make the trek back to Toronto for the next three Thursdays to make sure she's healing properly.

The good news is I saw her smile for the first time since the accident today, so I think we're turning the corner.

Aw man, I'm so sorry. I just recovered from a broken elbow but not nearly as bad!! Omigod, the pain is unbelievable!! But gets waaay better once the swelling subsides.

Fortunately, she's young and growing and should be fine eventually. I broke A LOT of bones as a kid and have no real lingering effects, some clicking here and there...
Wish her a speedy recovery, man.
Sincerely,

This isn't her actual x-ray, but this is the break Abby sustained. My wife almost passed out from the shock when they showed her.

I'm a PA at a county ED. Epicondylar fractures in that age group are really common. I feel like I call the ortho specialists every few days for 1. They usually do well from what the ortho specialists tell me. Phone Post

Awesome. Thanks, dude. I'll tell my wife.

Dang, poor pup! I'm dealing with a bone injury at the moment.
Here's something I've come across:

So what to do for pain, you might rightly ask? There are many ways to naturally deal with it. Here’s one that works and is chock-full of nutrients: beets. Studies have shown that beets inhibit COX-1 and COX-2, thanks to their rich content of betanin, isobetanin, and vulgaxanthin, the specific phytonutrients responsible for their anti-inflammatory action.

Also a bunch of medical reports saying to stay way away from NSAID's for pain.

Sorry, all I got.

Chocolate Al FTW! Phone Post

Wow that injury looks terrible.  A friend in our gym just went through a surprise brain tumor experience with his young son who is recovering perfectly now.  As the father of a little girl, I can't imagine how stressful that must be.  In my limited experience in the health care field, kids are great at healing, and as gruesome as that looks I have to believe her body will bounce back and she'll be as good as new.

Thanks, man.

We had a pharmacist tell us to get her on ibuprofen for swelling, but we were warned that is slows healing by our orthopaedic surgeon. We had to argue with her. I think she took one look at us (we had maybe 5 hours sleep in two days between us, and were in sweats and ball caps) and figured we were drug-addicted scammers trying to get some morphine for ourselves.

Got her eating some pickled beets as I type this.

Also bud, call your doc and let them know the morphine isn't cutting it. Sometimes dr's go a little conservative on the pain meds and leave you without relief. I had it happen after oral surgery and roughed it through an horrible night post op.

It seems a girl her age shouldn't have to go through that if she doesn't have to. Morphine is is pretty low on the opiate ladder these days and better drugs are available. Unless you're trying to stay away from stronger drugs, maybe hitting your dr up might be the answer. They can call stuff in from wherever.

Good luck. Phone Post

I have had a similar injury to my knee. It will take a few months to heal, but she may have a clicking feeling for the rest of her life. Any pressure change, cold air, or incoming thunderstorm and she will feel it in the joint. It actually makes for a good weather predictor.

Good luck. I hope she gets well soon.

Thanks guys. Stress level has gone from a 9 to a 6.5,thanks to the UG. Phone Post

Excellent

Awwwwww... poor girl:(  Is there anything your fellow UGers can do for you?
