Anyone here skip rope for conditioning?
I got my heart rate up to 130 but with sprints I can
get it up to 160. Skipping rope can be more fun than sprinting, any thoughts?
Jumping rope is a good warmup activity.
Double unders are a great thing to throw into a work out!
I'd like to but it's too dangerous...I would kill myself doing it.
You can get a great workout jumping rope but as you raise the intensity you tend to also add more technical difficulty.
Jumping rope is not optional for a martial artist/fighter IMO. It's too important for footwork.
Try mixing high knee sprints, hoping side to side, etc.
I can spar 10 plus rounds, grapple for hours and jumping rope always kills me.
I do it everytime I go and train thai boxing
It kills you because you have not done it often to condition your ankles & calves like any other body part.
You can jump rope for footwork practice and you can jump rope for strictly cardio or some mixture of the two.
Strictly cardio would be something like high knee sprinting where you swing the rope each time you lift a foot. Go all out for as long as you can take it or do one minute rounds all out, or tabatas, or pick say,500 jumps and time yourself, constantly trying to lower your time. Do the same variations as you do double-unders(two spins per jump).
Footwork drills are endless, you can invent all sorts of complicated foot patterns and do for rounds.
Try to see some of the rope-jumping competitions to see insane levels of cardio and agility.
look up ross enamait's videos on youtube (rossboxing.com), he's got some crazy jump rope workouts.
I've recently reached the point where I can actually jump rope at a decent pace for 3 3 minute rounds.
That is a high point for my fat ass.
I've discovered that jumping rope can be just as boring as fucking jogging though.
Mule,
Go for the sprinting with the rope(see my post above), you will not be bored my friend, you will be in fear of the coming round after you finish each round. Start with one minute rounds x 5, one min. rest between rounds and see how bored you are. The only stipulation is you must go all-out!
