raises hand
Ricardo Almeida hails from New Jersey and will enjoy the honor of being the hometown favorite in his virgin run at 170 pounds. The "Big Dog" began his career at the turn of the millenium but has accumulated only 15 fights in the last decade on account of a four-year absence from the sport from 2004-2008.
Almeida had a 1-2 stint during the UFC 30's, and proceeded to make his mark in MMA after he joined the Pancrase organization and unseated middleweight champ Nate "The Great" Marquardt with a guillotine choke. Despite snaring the belt away from Marquardt's grasp, this would be Almeida's last fight in Pancrase, and he eventually left the title up for grabs and had one fight in Pride, a decision win over Ryo Chonan, before dropping off the map.
Almeida re-emerged in the UFC in 2008, where the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt stacked up three wins (Yundt, Horwich, Grove) with one loss to Patrick Cote before deciding his frame could be squeezed into that of a welterweight's.
Scrapper, spartan, no-nonsense, and naturally talented all describe his foe on Saturday night, Matt Brown. "The Immortal" is a feisty competitor that has endeared himself to hardcore fans with gritty and exciting performances, namely in his spirited clash with heralded overseas product Dong Hyun Kim, whom many expected would flatten Brown. Brown ended up losing a tight decision, but earned oodles of respect for his hardnosed resilience.
