Sweet Ashi Waza in Sudden Death for the NCAA SHW Title! Go Judo!
I saw it yesterday. Nice ot win! What are the chances Mocco will take up MMA?
"Actually, it was wrestling.
That is all."
Mocco did Judo as a kid and favored that technique while competing in judo. Call it whatever ya want, it worked. That is all.
Anyone know whwere a vid of this could be found. I feel left out because I didn't see it.
he used a foot sweep to pick up a single leg and then he finished it. the guy "bellied down" during the takedown. i was unaware that takedowns to the stomach are scoring techniques in judo. i was also unaware that single legs were so widely used in judo.
judo trolls need to stop this crap. it was a wrestling match won by a wrestler using wrestling technique. why does all this silly stuff matter?
a replay will be on tuesday at 2:30 on espn2 i believe
Hunter, what move was it?
"Inside leg trip" sounds like O uchi or Ko uchi gari.
What a great final. Mocco has been hitting that footsweep for years even though everyone knows its coming.
what was interesting was that they said that while at Iowa, the trip was really his only move. Since transferring to Oklahoma St he has picked up a single leg takedown.
His judo national championship was mentioned on the broadcast.
Whatever. It was used in wrestling so call it a leg trip. But chances are, he got it from his Judo training. I've read an article where one of his wrestling coaches mentions the leg trip and says he got it from years of Judo. It sounded like Blatnick was gonna say somomething about that before getting cut off (due to something that had just happened on the mat). His Judo did get mentioned though.
"i was unaware that takedowns to the stomach are scoring techniques in judo."
- There are not.
"i was also unaware that single legs were so widely used in judo.

- Single legs are not "so widely used in judo" but are still used (ie. its not really a bread a butter judo move). You have to understand that both wrestling and judo are takedown oriented grappling so there are tons of stuff that cross over and are practiced in both.
So this guy is now both won national titles in judo and wrestling? Nice.
There are many techniques from Judo that are used in wrestling it's not uncommon.Ever hear of a Jap whizzer?
He has very good Judo, I watched him workout when he was at Iowa and he has a bunch of nice throws he hits as well as a mean inside trip.
It is his foot sweep that is his takedown. The colossal prick does not have anything else except for defense.
It is a judo technique, but it is not unique. The way it turned out, Konrad went to his stomach. Mocco the prick has put plenty of others to thier backs with it.
I am from Iowa so I am bitter.
I would not say this to his face.
lol
It looked like Sasae (Tsurikomi Ashi) or a Sticky Foot (Sweep) in Judo
Ashi Wazas (Leg/Foot Techniques of Judo):
Harai Tsurikomi Ashi (Lifting Pulling Foot Sweep)
Kosoto Gama (Minor Outside Sickle)
Kosoto Gari (Small Outside Reap)
Okuriashi Harai (Following Foot Sweep)
Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi (Lifting Pulling Ankle Block)
Tsubame Gaeshi (Swallow's Flight Reversal)
Yoko Gake (Side Hook)
"Mocco wrestled his entire life too. Call it whatever you want but he did it in wrestling so I'll call it wrestling."
I love how internet experts continue to comment. Steve Mocco played at my club in North Bergen before he went off to college. His sister still plays there and she's a freakin' handful.
The broadcasters themselves say he doesn't like doing singles and doubles and prefers his patented sweep. Also the trip he executed wasn't an "inside trip", which would be an Ouchi gari, but was a trailing deashi barai.
"Ever hear of a Jap whizzer?"
Once. I had a pretty mediocre orgasm and demanded my $450 back.
ttt
Mocco's judo background and footsweeps have been talked about AD NAUSEUM on the main wrestling forums for years.
To sum up what has been said:
His judo footsweep is pretty much the only offensive tech he is an expert in.
He has a great defense which keeps him from getting scored on.
When he finishes NCAA wrestling, he will devote himself completely to freestyle (why he transferred from Iowa)
He will run into trouble at the international level (Worlds/Olympics) since all the Eastern European wrestlers have a lot of familiarity with footsweeps and other judo-style techniques.
Congrats to Mocco. One more year of eligibility and then pure Freestyle in hopes of 2008
