I've been trying to really work my closed guard lately to stop some of the bigger, stronger, younger dudes from smashing me on a regular. I'm really enjoying it. Anyone else use the closed guard a lot, or is it really a dinosaur?
The over hook from closed guard is one of my favorite positions to attack from. The collar choke, triangle or omoplata almost always present themselves either as a singular attack or chained together.
Yes. Dragging the arm across to take the back or set up high guard is my go to. Seeing Michael Liera Jr's success with this really motivated me to work on this technique.
I've also been having some success with Williams Guard.
Thanks for the responses. Any other suggestions for current BJJ players to watch to see the closed guard in action?
I use hip bump to crossing the arm taking the back
Go to guard...
I try to. Still trying to get better at it tho.
I love the closed guard and utilize it often (especially against faster younger opponents). There are still pockets of active competitors that use the closed guard as their "A" move.
Liera for example utilizes the cross sleeve arm drag in all of his matches.
Abraham Marte is as a very aggressive overhook closed guard game (http://www.digitsu.com/abraham-marte-aggressive-closed-guard-dvd-p-98.html)
Abmar Barbosa is widely know for his closed gaurd game also. (http://www.digitsu.com/abmar-barbosa-jiujitsu-outlaw-closed-guard-on-demand-p-15.html)
Finally while he is a lesser known name Dan Covel from Marcelo's has a super intricate system based on his inverted closed guard. (http://www.digitsu.com/dan-covel-black-magic-closed-guard-dvd-p-45.html) He is fighting Geo Martinez in the next Polaris
This video is a good example of Dan's inverted closed guard in action.
Rediscovered closed guard. Love it and used it successfully in my last comp. Against an advanced, skilled opponent you have to have good open guard CONTROL to mask what you really want, the closed guard. Shoot closed guard from open guard just like you would a triangle or omoplata.
In.
As a 145er its hard to even close my legs around guys bigger than 180 or so...it's an issue.
Against smaller guys closer to my size I love using it though and attack arm drags, pendulum sweeps, triangles, and armbars in a nice little sequence.
Check out Jaime Canutu. He won world's at black in his division subbing every match almost exclusively from closed guard.
All the time. It's my best guard. Big Pressure Carlson / Marcelo Alonso style.
This is great. Thank you for all the responses. I'll be downloading a bunch of those youtube videos to watch on the train.
I'm a blue belt and I'd basically given up on the closed guard for years. I found spider and de la Riva so much easier to enter. I've been working out a lot recently and I find that increased hip mobility and leg strength is helping me enter into and hold closed much easier than before, even on bigger guys.
I love closed guard. My best position. Problem is the good guys won't let you get it on them. I started working my half guard hard core because it was so damn hard to get close guard on anyone legit.
I use it until I loose it - then work the open guard.
all the time.
SidRon - I love closed guard. It can be challenging to get against better players though. Check out Roger Gracie's game. Arm drag to back take, flower sweep, or armbar. TrumpetDan has a pretty good YouTube series breaking it down.I hear this a lot, about it being a difficult guard to get to, but I've never had trouble getting to it. It's my main guard, so I've got a lot of ways to get to it and I'm always looking for it, so maybe that's it. But yeah, closed guard is the shit.
Check out:
Roger Gracie, of course
Michael Liera Jr.
Claudio Calasans
Abraham Marte
Carlos "Portuguese" Vieira
Sergio "Canudo" Zimmermann (favorite)

Yes. First Guard I learned back in the day. I play other guards but when nothing else works and I'm getting smashed I go back to closed guard. My 'A' game move like others have mentioned is taking the back from closed guard, both in gi and nogi.
