Anyone Train in Brazil? What's Cost?

What's the typical cost (in Brazilian Reals) of training BJJ in Brazil?  Im talking about normal BJJ gyms that offer BJJ at least 5-6 times a week.

Less than 300 reais for a month. Think de la riva was around 200-250 from memory. Black belts got it a little cheaper too

Damn! I just checked and almost 5 reais to the pound, was like 3 last time I was there 2 years ago ??

Depends which city, which club you want to train at.

Some schools you pay a flat fee for unlimited bjj 2-3 times day, 6 days a week. Other schools you pay for either morning or evening classes. Unlimited around 3-500 reais, monring only a bit cheaper. Most places you need to pay membership fee which is a bit annoying.

I've trained in Sao Paulo, Ilhabela, Sao Sebastiao, Ilha Grande, Rio. I would strongly recommend Ilhabela. Diego that have a cross fit + marital arts academy is super cool. National champ in both judo and bjj. He refused to accept my money and let me train for free for a couple of weeks. Nice dude.

If you stay longer you can easily find a room in a shared apt. Cost in decent areas of Rio and Sao Paulo is ca 1500-2000 reais per month. If you travel alone a hostel is probably better. Get to know many young people. Cost for hostel is cheap in Brasil. Can find good hostels in Rio 50 reais/night. Carnaval season housing gets ridicolous though.

But remember bjj training in Brasil is a bit different. Dont get frustrated about their relaxed sense of time. Classes start 30-60 min after scheduled time.

Thanks for the feedback. So I'm talking unlimited training. What would be typical costs associated with unlimited training at a recognized affiliation like Ribeiro or Alliance...on average

For example,  in the states most places range from $135/month to $300 usd

i was talking about Rio in my post above, by the way.

FYI don't turn up to de la riva, BTT, Carlson Gracie, Felipe costa, Alliance or checkmat 30 to 60 minutes late because you will be 30 to 60 minutes late for the start of class

I trained luta livre in Rio last year. Morning only was 200 reais/month. I checked the Fabio Gurgel academy in Sao Paulo which was 650 reais/month unlimited training if you sign up for 3 month. Expensive but that is prob one of the best gyms in the world.

Sao Paulo a bit more costly than Rio. I used to live in there when l was young. Not brasilian though, just did my masters at SP University. Busy city, good subway. No beaches.

Gurgel gym is in the richest area of SP, so prob better live in other area. Butanta is ok. Ca 30-40 min bus to the gym. The ryan gracie gym in SP is cheaper. Don't remember price. Check it out.

^ Which gym did you train LL at? I would love to do that.

I trained at RFT HQ in Rio with Mestre Cromado. Botafogo area. You should try it. Think they changed the location recently though. Youre gonna love it.

i'm graded under and train at Rio Fighters with Milton Vieira, well worth a visit if you go to Rio. I've also visited cromado's and the training was very good there too

Thanks for the advice. The places I've been at are relaxed with the time. Im european so it took a while to get used to the brasilian time ??

i notied at some places the pro training would start whenever, but the timetabled public classes started on time. It's a bit hit and miss. European too, arranging to meet someone is a pain in the ass haha

I trained at Equipe Motta in Barretos, São Paulo. Equips Motta is a great gym, Huelder Motta is a great instructor and they have tons of bad dudes on the mats and mma fighters. Motta is a great guy to be around in general but best coach I've ever had. I'd fight for that guy any day

I don't remember the price because I got it much cheaper than most because I was friends with one of his brown belt students and I went to stay there with them. However I do remember thinkin hell this is cheap. Even without my discount but it's a great school, reasonably priced and it's in a nice city.

I’ve watched some of his videos. Does he speak English?

Same question: Does Milton Vieira speak any English?

Not a lot but he understand a good amount. Last time I trained with him was Oct 2016 in Rio. I also trained with him when he visited CA a few times over the last 9-10 years. Highly recommend Rio fighters.

i also trained at Checkmat in Copa and it was I believe 150 reals for 2 weeks of training. I trained there for like 6 or 7 days cause it was 2 blocks from our Airbnb but honestly the training wasn’t super gringo friendly.

I was a brown belt at the time and I fight mma and compete a fair amount so I’m used to tough training, and they seemed to not like us being there (I was in a group of 4 with one giant 240lb purple belt and 2 blue belts). My buddy was obviously the biggest dude pretty much everywhere we went but we didn’t feel like we were being got after at any other places.

Terere’s was the best though and we really got to spend some time with him outside the gym hanging out and he was pretty much everything I hoped he would be, just a special kind of person.

I was in touch with Milton Viera before going but chose RFT in the end. Don’t know if he speak any english since I speak portuguese.

You can always chech w the olympic training center if you want to train wrestling. Is in Tijuca. The luta livre was not as wrestling heavy as Id wanted it. I got an impromptu private by Roberto Leitão at RFT which was cool. His son is ex olympian in wrestling and think heads the national wrestling federation. He suggested I contact his son for wrestling practice. Dec to feb is hell in Rio. 40°C and humid as hell so try avoid that period. Lots of tourists as well that tome.

He speaks very well really, he helped me out a lot back in the day at BTT before I spoke any portuguese. You’d have no problems talking to him

Damn this thread made me wanna go back to Brasil soon.

I wrote a word press on this. I think it’s like Kennycrybaby.wordpress.com or something. I made like 10 posts while in rio. Trained with checkmat, commuted from barra. I broke down a lot of costs if I remember correctly. It’s a few years old. Disagree that fight zone is not gringo friendly
