don't think very many people are against any kind of immigration
it is massive, uncontrolled immigration that is a problem
the government exists to serve it's citizens. it doesn't exist so rich, powerful people can allow massive immigrants increasing the supply of labor so production costs are lowered.

While I sympathize with the plight of decent people born in various hellholes, if immigration makes life worse for the people of the host nation, particularly to the tune of greater risk of becoming victims of violent crime, then it runs counter to the interests of the host nation's people, and should not take place.
To more directly answer your question, it's nice to save some good people, but one's own people should come first. If a better nation, with its finite resources, is to assist people from perpetually less hospitable places, it can be done from a distance.

In my mind saving decent people is a good thing but only as long as long as the country can provide and integrate them into society in a healthy way.
For my country of Sweden I think closing the borders now until we have a good situation with and for those who have already come here would be a good thing.
