So apparently the NJ athletic commission said arlovski vs johnson 1st round was 5min 8 secs. Arlovski broke his jaw after the 5 min mark. Should it be declared a no contest?
It should, but I have little faith in commissions doing the right thing.
No way it should if the fight was stopped after the first I would agree but he had 2 more rounds to win the fight
greeeeaat, super professional job
The athletic commision really dropped the fucking ball, but you can't go by the reasoning that Arlovski would have won if that woudn't have happened. It wasn't like Andre stopped fighting and AJ hit him, both men were still fighting. I think that whoever fucked up should be fired, but Rumble Johnson shouldn't be penalized because he fought until he was stopped.
I get the safety issue but it's not like Anthony hit him after the bell sounded so the commission will say protect yourself at all times
Yea i guess, but there mistake caused a broken jaw. Yea, you should fight til the bell, however, that shot would never have happened, changing the whole fight.
Their*
M'eh . . . I dunno.
No doubt somebody dropped the ball.
But as noted above, it's not like Johnson hit him after the bell or that Arlovski had stopped defending himself because he somehow knew time was up. It certainly wasn't enought extra time to claim there was a cardio impact that Arlovski wasn't prepared for. Indeed, it doesn't appear that anybody protested, or even noticed, in-between rounds. And Arlovski was able to continue afterward.
My understanding is that the round lasts from the time the ref says fight until the time the bell rings, so the strikes were legal. That Arlovski took that hit during the 8 second "extra" period was really happenstance--the exact same sequence could've occured 20 seconds earlier.
The bottomline is that the fight was still "live" to the ref and both fighters. So unless Arlovski can really claim that he stopped defending himself because he reasonably believed the round was over, then petitioning for an NC now makes him appear to be seeking an NC on a "technicality."
He got beat.
Are we positive it was that shot that broke the jaw? I can't remember anything else landing clean but Johnson hits so hard something else may have caused it
Billytk - although it wasn't aj's fault the fact that AA had his jaw broken AFTER the 5 minute mark obviously effected the rest of the fight
Right, but why is that important?
My understanding--and perhaps I'm wrong--is that it is the BELL and the REF, not a stop watch outside of the cage, that determines when the round is over.
Turn the situation around. What if the bell was rung 8 seconds EARLY, Johnson punched Arlovski after the bell in that 8 second window, Arlovski declared he couldn't continue, and Johnson was disqualified. Would we be arguing in that circumstance that Johnson should actually get a win (or an NC) because the hit in fact came during the 5 minute time limit?
I don't think so.
I think the round ends when the bell rings or the ref intervenes, but not before. So long as we have humans ringing the bell based on a separately kept timer, we will always have at least small differences between the actual timing of the round and the time the bell is rung.
Those differences should not be a basis for overturning a fight.
The bell had not rung, all involved believed the fight was still "live," and Johnson's strikes were legal. That the strikes landed during the 8 extra seconds was purely a chance occurence. There's no doubt an official made an error, but I don't think it warrants taking the win away from Johnson.
seems like no contest would be fair
Kamakosmo - How f'n hard it is for the bell ringing dude to watch a countdown clock and 'ding ding ding' it after 5 exact minutes?
It's the ONLY job he has? Da fuq?
He was excited by the action! He forgot
He should sue the commission or something being that he took 8 seconds of additional punishment, got knocked down multiple times (concussion?) and lost his teeth when in reality the round should have ended long before any of that happened.
I timed the round as having ended right as both take big swings at each other and miss (before Arlovski's front kick and before Johnson got to land his knock down shots).

If his broken jaw happened after the 5 mins the commission should atleast pay for his medical bill
What gets me is the fact that we're still depending on a human being to accurately start/stop rounds. Automate it, with an override for when the Ref stops the fight for a time-out, etc.

Something so simple yet I never even thought of that. Could u imagine the buzzer not going off in a basketball game? Alot can happen in 8 secs
