Arm over neck throw working in men's MMA? Not.

I remember like 8 years ago on TUF seeing one of the guys in a training session trying that same arm over neck (sorry don't know the correct judo term) hip throw Ronda performed easily against Davis.

The coach stopped the practice and yelled at the kid, "Don't EVER try that stupid throw again. Those sorts of throws never work these days. The guys are too good and will easily stop and counter it. The sport has evolved way beyond that stupid, easy to avod technique."

So it made me wonder. Is Ronda just that good at it, or have the women STILL not evolved enough to avoid this throw and/or there aren't enough female competitors? I don't remember the last time it was executed in a men's match (although I imagine at some time it has) let alone in a title fight.

I don't recall Sokoudjou, who was the 2001 US Open Judo Champion, tossing guys around like that with that sort of throw.

Those throws do work, Lombards hit a few. also that specific throw was easier because davis was pretty much ko'ed by the earlier right. Phone Post 3.0

Couldn't say for sure, but Davis was clearly
stunned which greatly improves the chance of any technique working Phone Post 3.0

Ronda has hit that throw on everyone whether they're rocked or not

works occasionally , my training partners last fight the guy hit it once on him and when it hit the mat he rolled over and got on top, then later the guy tries the same throw and he ducked up and took his back and suplexed him , so it really doesn't work well Phone Post 3.0

Ask cub swanson if they work... He used to hit them all the time? Phone Post 3.0

A prime Karo Parisian is the only fighter I can think of who was able to constantly toss competitors on their head in a similar fashion to Ronda.

Laimon isn't a wrestler Phone Post 3.0

Ronda makes them work because she's been tossing people around that way since she was an infant.

Most dudes in MMA are not olympic-level judo specialists, so their expertise in landing those throws isn't something they can consistently rely on in a fight. But they're not totally rare either, we see someone bust one out once every few weeks/months.

This he was a beast I remember him tossing Diaz all around in their fight. He might of been champ if he stayed clean. Phone Post 3.0

It probably comes down to who is trying it. There's a high degree of difficulty in hitting it against someone who knows it's coming...but it can certainly work if you're damn good at it.
Kinda like Chuck's wild looping punches. They're technically awful, but he has worked on them so well that he made people scared to death of 'em.

Usually performed with an underhook rather than arm round the neck.

With the arm round the neck it leaves you open to having your back taken in the scramble when it hits the floor.

sekundarburnes - in any case, men's mma has evolved past 16 second beatdowns in the UFC

Bang/Goulet and Duffee/Whoever were both shorter than that.

JDS/Werdum ended with the first exchange, the only reason it was longer than 2 seconds is because there was some dancing around before that.

There are a ton of men's fights that end with the first real exchange.

I think men being topless and sweaty/greasy with short hair/bald while women have tops and usually longer hair helps. Phone Post 3.0

I can't recall if yoshida used it, but I bet it works for him in mma

Yeah laimon told Chris Sanford no that judo head throw stuff doesn't work. The way Rhonda does them is a thing of beauty though. Phone Post 3.0

didn't Lombard hit that on Shields a few times?

It works for Ronda because of her tremendous experience in judo. Lombard and akiyama would hit similar throws as well. The coach was just making the point that because they don't have the throw perfect (and probably never will) they shouldn't use it as it can be easily countered. Phone Post 3.0
