There were several controversial situations that occurred at the end of the Arnold Worlds. I hope to shed some light on the situations, I would ask that the parties directly involved only respond to this thread: ATT coach (Mr. Diaz), Mr. Schermer, Mr. Pano, Jeff Monson, Leo Dalla etc.
Forwards or Backwards Cervical Crank:
It was made clear in the rules manual posted on the website and the rules meeting that in all divisions the cervical neck attack (Opponent A secures Opponent B's head and purposely hyper-extends or hyper-flexes Opponent B cervical column with the intent to submit Opponent B) was illegal and therefore if attempted could result in a disqualification. It also stated that if an opponent submitted to an illegal technique that the competitor committing the illegal attack would loose the match. Monson being DQed was the correct course of action.
Overtime:
Overtime was only allowed in the Pro division. The stipulations for initiating an overtime would be if the score was tied, and both parties were equal with regards to aggressiveness and technical prowess. In the women's pro match an overtime was requested by the competitors coach because points were equal for both competitors but the referee identified that one of the women was more aggressive (attacks and attempted take down) and that is the reason she was deemed the winner. This was the correct course of action.
Biz Challenge:
There were many spectators that were concerned about the purple belt competitor that fought Pe De Pano for the prize money. I was personally refereeing the match and can tell you exactly what happened. The man was effectively defending himself the entire fight, when Pano took his back and started to sink the choke the man tucked his chin and raised his shoulders in defense, Pano changed to a neck crank and came across the chin (legal technique) do to the pressure across the mouth his lip split. I was on the ground looking under and asking if he was OK and telling him to be careful. When he tapped, the scene looked 100 x worse than it was, as it always does with a face cut. After the fight I went directly to the man to see if he needed anything and he told me he was fine. The only regret he told me was that "I didn't attack when he I had the chance". A great warrior with great spirit. The fans didn't hear or see that. In the end his lip was split and probably in need of 1 or 2 stitches.
Unfortunately at the end of the day I was not there due to our teams plane flight but it it appears to me that in both situations the referees made the correct decision. Just because there is money on the line, a match is close, or a big name fighter is competing does not change the rules of the tournament. I hope that all of the Jiu-jitsu/Grappling fighters that attended the tournament and those of you who keep up with the tournament circuits do not see this occurrence as a representation of the tournament as a whole. We spent countless hours trying to make this tournament run as best we could and until that point I was very proud of what we had accomplished. This situation reinforces the continuous need to reform the sport. All of this occurred because a few individuals made some poor decisions. If all the parties involved in the altercations would have paid a little closer attention to our tournament mission and philosophy none of this would have happened.
IV.To display courage, discipline, sportsmanship, and camaraderie through competition.
I was very proud to have been apart of this years Arnold. The highlight for me was to see the great Black Belt instructors received an Award of Appreciation for all of their contributions to the sport. As always I met some great people, met new friends and observed the best technical jiu-jitsu and submission grappling in the US.
Respectfully,
Garth Spendiff
Arnold Worlds, Head Ring Captain
Relson Gracie Savannah, GA Head Instructor
I would like to hear replies to rules, Jeff, Pa, Mr. Diaz, Mr. Shermer etc.
TTT! good seeing you on here Garth it's Eric from Leonel's school.
Garth- First of all, ATT's coach was not Mr Diaz (He
is Brown Belt) but me (Parrumpinha). Second, what
about the tape that the lady (who I dont know the
name, sorry)has, showing that you guys said that CAN
OPENNER was allowed ONLY TO OPEN THE GUARD, and if
insisting could result a DQ? Third, what about
TAKEDOWNS? You and Relson told me that a fighter will
be awarded with 2 points NO MATTER IF HIS OPPONENT
LAND ON HIS KNEES, HANDS,... Our only concern was
about that.
This is reposted from the Monson Speaks Out thread but
is appropriate here as well:
Garth,
Oh great. Another Reslon spin doctor on here with an
endless diatribe of watered down bullshit to account
for the complete lack of organization, class, and
forthrightness shown on behalf of Relson and his
cronies, including you (I will get to that in a
minute).
1. You were not there so you do not know what was said
and what was not said about the rules. As I said in a
previous post you need to put a whiteboard next to
each mat to keep track of the rules for each match and
all of the changes that continue to occur throughout
the tournament and the matches themselves. The problem
is not with the rules, it is with the absolute lack of
proper and consistent application of them. As the head
referee you should be fucking ashamed of yourself and
the performance of all of your subordinates. Bottom
line, you did a shitty job and so did most everyone
you were responsible for when it came down to it. This
is particulalry true in the pro division matches where
there should have been three ref's per match (there
were only two, Reslon included) to at least keep
people honest.
2. Do not come on here and preach some holier than
though bullshit about how we all have to be above this
and let's move forward, not backward. Go fuck yourself
you condescending asshole, you were not the one who
was fucked over, Jeff and I were so that Relsons'
golden boy, Pe De Pano, could be handed the title on
silk lined platter. I would not be suprised if there
was a deal in place whereby Relson got a piece of
PDP's purse back. Bottom line here, your "master' is
far more guilty than any of us of immature and
inappropriate behavior, go preach to him.
3. During my match with Leonel Perez you made a
comment to the ref that I was stalling in the guard,
despite the fact that his guard was closed. This was
despite the fact that your own people stated that
their was no stalling call from the closed guard. As
an affiliate of Leonel you are certainly entitled to
shout words of encouragement for him and should.
However, as the head ref, you should keep your mouth
shut with regard to instruction of the referee unless
you are asked for a clarification or interpretation by
the referee or one of the contestants. Bottom line
here, do not give selective input when it is
beneficial to those affiliated with you, either be
consistent or do not do it at all unles called upon.
Where were you when I was pleading for a look at the
two takedowns on Pe De Pano ? That is what I thought.
4. How can any truly responsible head referee leave
before the event is over and the pro's are done
competing ? Again, I not only question your
performance but your dedication and integrity.
5. The veiled threat of Dalla pressing charges is
laughable. If they did that then they would aslo have
to arrest Soneca who kicked an innocent bystander,
Relson who pushed several people, and a multitude of
others involved in the melee. In fact, if you really
get down to it and talk legalities and alike, the
foundational basis exists for a class action (or at
least multiple party plaintiff) suit agaist Relson for
the way the tournament was run, missed flights,
failure to follow rules, etc., etc. etc. Hell, I bet I
would have a damn good case against him for not only
the purse I was fucked out of but my travel expenses
and punitive damages. Bottom line here is do not cast
stoned from the balcony of your masters glass house.
Relson, Cooper and the whole gang, you included, could
probably be criminally prosecuted for particiapation
in what could be found to be a massive scam, there are
certainly no shortage of outspoken witnesses.
Continued ........
To close, if you want to take the high road, and move
forward, do not come on here and try to spin a
situation into being appropriate, it was not and I
will challenge you at every turn. The right thing to
do, and the only thing I see saving this tournament on
a go forward basis is to have Relson issue a public
apology to Me and anyone else he fucked, to everyone
that competed for the lack of organization, and
finally to send me the $2500 that I worked my ass off
for and am entitled to.
Wade Rome The REAL Arnold Classic Champion
Question: what is the appropriate course of action if the fighters were told they could use the can opener during the rules meeting, and then later are DQed for using it? What takes precedence... the rules posted on a website or the rules explained to the competitors before the matches?
Garth you did a great job at the event. Do not take
any of what people are talking personally. None of it
is your fault. After you left the event really went
to hell. We were all tried, worked very hard and put
in an unreal amount of time and effert in to this
event.
Wade was screwed. The video will prove it. The
referee was not at any of the rules meeting so he
didn't know the rules. By CBJJ rules it was not a
takedown. The referee is a CBJJ rules pro.
Jeff vs Pe de Pano is another story maybe the
technique was illegal and maybe it was not. But the
referee never got the chance to make the call because
Pe de Pano made the call for him.
We covered this in the rules meeting when we talked
about footlocks. I asked what if the person being
footlocked purposlly turns the wrong way like a fag
trying to get the other fighter DQ'd. You stated that
the was up to the Referee to decide. In the Pe vs
Jeff match the referee called twice for the fight to
restart but Pe refussed and Relson (who was not the
ref) awarded the win to Pe.
As the head of the Referees and Rules meeting I think
you would agree with me that Pe's refussing to fight
after being told to twice by the referee is ground for
DQ as well as an extreme example of poor
sportsmanship.
It was a very ugly situation and I was looking for you
to clear it up when i found out you had to leave.
You did a great job and you were the glue that held
the event together. After you left it fell apart.
Scotty
Parrumpinha,
Sorry, Mr. Diaz is always with the team at the events so I assumed he served as a leason or coaching role for the team. The video you speak of probably has me showing that you can hold behind the head to stand or posture but you can not pull the head forwards (hyper-flexion). I demonstrated and explained this several times, you can hold to stand but not pull to pass using the head. If in Mr Rome's match PDP knees and hands clearly hit the mat points should have been awarded regardless of control if Mr. Rome initaite the action. If I were their I would have ruled in favor of Mr. Rome if that were the case.
-Garth
Garth-I'm the misterious Mr. Diaz.Parrumpa is correct I'm not the coach for ATT and only a poor working mule. Not that out of the way, a craddle of the back of the head with both hands; is that a can opener or what; how can a ref determine what is the right amount of pressure to stop a cradle of the head (can opener).About the OT. You mentioned that OT was allowed during the Pro matches, I used this rule in the Shonie Carter and JD match. During the OT Shonie secured one leg and JD pulled guard, under your rules that constitutes as a takedown. Jacare argued about this with Relson and Relson then said in a loud and determined way THERE IS NO OVERTIME FOR THE PROS!!!I enjoy participating and reffing at many grappling events, but when the rules change every other match is very discurraging.
He asked me to post this for him.
Leo Dalla Statement:
1- I wasnt a referee, but Parrumpinha asked me to be the ref for that match and since I was trying to go home as soon as possible but I had to wait for the tournament finished so I decided to help. From my understanding I tought that was allowed to use this can opener.
2- My personal opinion Pe de Pano really act like a bitch, he should
complain with me and not tap asking for the victory. My position was
let keep them fighting, and Monsen new that, I just took the decision after Relson took the position and told to disqualify. My position dont count and I just follow the rules even thou that I thought that was unfair. We have to learn from that so next time it not happen again, Pé de Pano should be the one disqualified for not act like a man and try take take advantage on the
rules.
3- I understand Jeff be upset, but what he did is not a man act either. I had innumerous situations like that, where I felt they screw me but I didnt take no actions like that. One of those situations one ATT guy was a ref. (Avelans tournament). We have to set good examples and not destroy the image of our sport, so next time think before take any action because actions like that can ruin your life. Im not a kind of guy who will sue someone for nothing but someone else could make you get in a lot of trouble.
4- Instead of completely blame Relson, try to help to improve the
quality of the tournaments. I use to run tournaments and is hard to deal with 1000 people and make everybody happy. You guys from ATT can ask Parrumpinha or Edson about the tournaments, they both use to ref for my tournament. My personal thought about the tournament is that Relson should use the confederation rules and not try to modify for 1 tournament.
Mark Adams is the purple-belt that went against Pe De Pano in the black-belt challenge match. He is an absolute stud!
It sucks that he wasn't allowed to compete in the pro-division because of the cut though. He qualified by winning the Relson Nationals.
I though that Mark Adams was a white belt not purple. The purple belt guy was the guy that had the challenge vs. the CEO from BIZ.
Wait a second. Pe De Pano tapped out from Monson's can opener!?
>>Wait a second. Pe De Pano tapped out from Monson's can opener!?
yes, but he said it was in protest
No, Mark Adams is a purple-belt. He got it in October after sweeping his divisions at the Relson Nationals. Mark was a college wrestler too, and happens to one of the strongest men alive.
In the womans match the brazillian girl was more of the aggressor? What match did you watch? Maribel kept advancing and shooting and attempting tae Gurumas,She went forward at the Brazillian girl the whole match.Get your eyes checked or review the tape.
