ARTICLE: Boxing is so 19th century

From the April 17th edition of Canada's National Post.

Funny. It's dated as being published today, but I'm 100% certain I've read that before. Not just the non sequitur argument that "it's a live video game" or the outdated human cockfighting reference, but I distinctly remember whole paragraphs of that editorial. The fairly distinctive comparison of Klitschko's defense to the marketability of going green, followed by the tongue in cheek comment that he's too 19th Century... I definately read that weeks ago.

I indicated that it was published on April 17th and I just checked and that's the date on the item.

I just came across it because I'm behind in my media monitoring so I do apologize it's already been posted.

It's by Frank Deford. He's being tongue-in-cheek, and he's not necessarily saying anything nice about MMA.

Yeah, I know that all. So I was wondering why the National Post is publishing something now that I'm positive I've already read somewhere else.

Thank God... I'm not going crazy. Sports Illustrated published this article around a month ago. National Post just put it up now for some reason.

It's almost exactly the same except for a few points. For example, whereas he cites 1995 as the year where headbutting etc. was disallowed in the SI article, the National Post uses the more vague, and distorting, phrase "a few years ago".

Frank Deford has been one of the most vocal anti-boxing members of the mainstream media for decades. I believe he has called for the sport to be abolished ever since the early 1980s.

And no, he definately doesn't like MMA either, but I think he enjoys the fact that it could be a possible threat to boxing.
