Undefeated ONE FC welterweight champion Ben Askren will defend his title against Luis 'Sapo' Santos in Manila, Philippines on April 24. This will be Askren's third fight for ONE FC, since the US MMA scene shamefully failed to keep him, with Bellator choosing not to re sign the Olympian, and the UFC not signing him at all.

Santos too is a veteran of Bellator, being released after losses to Ben Saunders and Ryan Ford. However, he has since gone on a seven fight win streak, six via first round KO.

Askren has been criticized for a fan unfriendly style, as indicated by a six fight decision streak, including a 2011 Split Decision win over Jay Hieron. However, his last four fights have all been stoppages, and of course have all been wins.

Not an interesting matchup. Askren by completely dominant decision.

I though Ben declared before his contract was up that he didn't want to re-sign and so they never bothered making him an offer. Either way, Ben is as responsible as anyone for not getting a stateside deal. Phone Post 3.0

He did but Bjorn did still try and re-sign him. After a few conversations he let go of their matching rights.

WSOF also offered Ben a deal. Phone Post 3.0

They should try and bring in Fitch.

Askren would rape him but I would still watch it. Phone Post 3.0

Could you maybe expand a little on what you mean? Rebney at the time sounded pretty unequivocally like he was not re signing Askren. This is just one of any number of times he said it in various ways:

--

Ben Askren officially became an unrestricted free agent Thursday as Bellator Fighting Championships announced it would not re-sign the welterweight champion.

Bellator will waive its contractual matching rights on Askren, who has fought for the company since 2010. The Bellator 170-pound title will remain vacant until Douglas Lima faces the winner of the Season 9 welterweight tournament early next year.

"I had a number of discussions with Ben and it became clear it was time for both parties to move in different directions," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said in a statement. "We've relinquished any fight to match here and Ben can sign with whoever he chooses to sign with. Ben's been at Bellator since the start of his career. I respect him and what he's accomplished and wish him the best wherever he goes."

Who could they even get? Everyone at that level is signed by the UFC, WSOF, or Bellator. The only guy who's even close who is a free agent (as far as I know) is Steve Carl.

Rebney wasn't very transparent regarding the whole Askren situation but they did make him multiple offers.

""It was just a different opinion," Rebney continued. "I thought we made offers that were reasonable and fair. We made him a serious offer. We made him a series of offers and he came back and yelled at me. I made him a whole new series of offers. And then he came back again and wanted them to get bigger."
Ultimately, Rebney claims, they couldn't come close to an agreement on the terms of a deal to move forward together.

"The Ben situation was completely different. If Ben had come around to the first set of offers we made, or even the second, we probably we would have re-signed him and continued to try to build that persona and continue to market and promote that heel image that's he cultivated that's just awesome."

askren will look the best he ever has now that punk is in his camp

Sapo is married to Corina Damm, correct? I obviously have no inside info. But wouldn't it be odd if a female used steroids, but her husband didn't? Phone Post 3.0

Sapo is no bum, and is literally dangerous everywhere. It would be a legit win for Askren but one of his few challenges left outside of Zuffa. Phone Post 3.0

So he is close to even against top 20 opponents and is one a seven fight win streak. That sounds like a phenom match up for outside the UFC.

Not a bum, but he has absolutely nothing for Askren. Only question is whether he survives 5 rounds.

Nice job misreporting the Bellator/Askren seperation.

It is really not that hard to google and find out more details.

The fact that people have pointed this out and the UG has still left it up is the sad part.

Anyone can misreport something by accident, but then not giving a shit after being told it's not accurate is pretty crappy.

It's not as bad as the UG'ers who think Askren was cut by Bellator. I've heard that one several times. Phone Post 3.0

I will watch just to BOOOOO! him after he wins.

hopefully i get to see pettis or brooks. haha
