Jacob Bell of the Bengals just quit the NFL. He is still in the prime of his career.

How long until we see this in Mixed Martial Arts? The only thing close to this is when Dana doesn't let guys keep fighting.
Football is way more violent than MMA. It also pays a lot more.
Sensible guy. I respect and approve.

Man if he's made good money and made good choices, fuck yeah leave it if you start to feel it is getting risky. If the guy is reasonably young, he can still do anything he wants, if he wants he can do marketing, engineering, training, no limit. I dunno who this guy is, but sounds like he's sensible.
Unless there's some sort of change to the rules that limit blows to the head most likely in the next 5-10 years we are going to see a lot of equipment change and redesign for both MMA and pro football.
Football isnt more violent its what the players use as weapons which causes so much damage. The shoulder pad and huge helmts that have made football iconic are probably the worse thing to happen for players' health. Everyone and anyone uses them to enhance the power and damage of their hits.
To many people are going to be butthurt about getting rid of them but somehow someway people smarter then all of us need to figure out how to redesign those items and or use better softer material so it doesn't inflict so much bodily harm.
The same could be said about MMA gloves and mouth piece, someone smarter then all of us will probably redesign the glove somehow where the damage resulted from a blow won't turn people's brain into jelly. Either that or just ban KOs since massive trauma to the brain occurs in mass from that alone.

That's a silly question.
Dana is quite literally a saint when it comes to protecting fighters. Just about every other promoter out there would have sakurabed Chuck because he was/is a big draw.
If you're arguing that a 10 year career in the NFL is not as dangerous as a 10 year career fighting 2-3 times a year then you're sorely mistaken.
Anybody seen the segment on crippled Football players? Scary.
Wow.
Headgear is not going to stop KOs. Personally, I am skeptical that they offer any protection from brain trauma. Three years ago, Jessica Bednark spent 30 days in the hospital, most of it in a medically induced coma, after suffering a brain bleed while training. With headgear. They reduce cuts, not much more.
CTE will continue to be an issue in football, hockey, pro wrestling, boxing and mma for a long time. Hopefully, science advances quickly, but I doubt the public appetite for these events will move anywhere near as quickly.
Damn to the brain and everywhere else and nerve damage that is the scariest of all
There's actually some thought that, for boxing, headgear increases the risk of CTE. Too late in the day to find any sites, but it's been discussed here a couple times. I think some of the activities (esp football/hockey) have a Peltzman effect in play, too: measures that improve the perception of safety also foster an increase in reckless behavior that offsets, or even eclipses, any actual safety gains.
MMA fighters would do the same if they were smarter.. make your money and get out
Just wait.. MMA causes severe brain damage, it will come out eventually.
lol @ ban KOs
If you want to limit the brain damage, take the gloves and wraps away.

I am sure Chuck could have fought somewhere else outside the UFC once his contract ran out. Since Zuffa gave him a job he doesn't need too. While Chuck probably couldn't see himself fighting outside the UFC he could have if he wanted too.
They could always go back to Pancrase rules. Open palm strikes only. No clinched fist or use of knuckles.

We were just discussing this topic in another thread.
I really do believe that there will be a day where the commissions will require participants to wear headgear at some point in the future, and the courts may impose a liability upon the orgs and government if they don't protect the fighters more.
KO's do not have to be a part of the sport - as much as this concept might upset the majority of the fans of this sport.
That would make the potential for the damage we are talking about WORSE. Headgear would allow fighters to CONTINUE to fight and take more and more repeated blows to the head. No sensible commission would adopt headgear to help protect the fighters from LONG TERM damage.
The reason we have so much damage these days is BECAUSE we require so much gear.
It allows for repeated sub-concussion contact.
UGCTT_LnPninja -Agree, but the phrase "sensible commission" unfortunately makes a big assumptionCarogan -
