Attn: 12- Re: Fake Gracie Combatives

checkuroil - I also think there should be a thread exposing guys who claim to have won tourneys but leave out the fact that there was no one else in the division. Plenty of pan American and mundial champs boasting on their websites leaving out those nuggets of info

Agreed.

you seem to forget that wallid is batshit crazy. i never thought of the legal aspect.

and rorion doesn't fuck around when it comes to using their proprietary logo or info.

I know of a guy who is a purple now and runs a school out of the basement of a hair salon who went to Brazil some years ago and competed in the worlds as a blue belt. Had one match and lost but because there were only 3 people in his division he got the bronze and he flaunts this all over. There was even an article about it in the local town newspaper. Of course he leaves out the part about losing and there only being three guys in his division.

Ohhh boy, this pops up every now and then. It wasn't the worlds (he tells everybody it was) but it was the Copa Du Mundo - the World Cup from an org which has since gone under because they couldn't find enough competitors. Hence only 3 in his division. The same guy also sandbagged a novice division in another tourney where he claims to be the Champion.

I can go on and on, but I've already done this one to death on the Canada Forum. Lets leave with a good laugh and call it a...

"Jiu Jitsu Salon" (freefaller21 - I knew you'd like this one)

He will get a cease and desist letter. He is infringing on their logo and is committing fraud by signing someone elses name for profit. It won't go anywhere but it will scare him. Phone Post

It's very funny that in this day and age where we can find almost ANYTHING on ANYONE through internet and other means some folks fall for BS like this. Even more thought provocking is that with all the Gracie Hate right here in this forum, there are many "Fake BJJ Nut Jobs" who will go the extra mile to misrepresent themselves to the ignorant few by using the Gracie name and brand and clock a few extra $$$.

All ANYONE has to do is Goggle: GRACIE JIU JITSU ACADEMY

Visit the website and verify affiliation.

The DUMMY is not he who does'nt know. The REAL DUMMY is he who does'nt want to learn!!!!

Yeah I remember that thread, it was epic. The thing is we were both white belts when I knew him and we had some pretty good rolls back then. I'm sure he is a legit purple as his current instructor is highly respected, but its laughable at how he uses/used that medal to promote himself.

my frens i gain some medal from situation like that described you know where they is? i not know i throw them in trash, undastan?

TraneUFC - "He forged a belt certificate in the name of the Gracie Academy in Torrance, CA, USA. No way in hell they will let that slide IMO."

No he did not. He never mentioned the "Gracie Academy" nor did he mention Torrance. His certificate says, "Gracie Combative Jiu-jitsu"
It doesn't even say "Gracie Combatives", the proper name for it.

He is a small fry, nothing will come of this, it isn't worth anyone's time, nor is there much, if any, of a case.

He did, however, use the Gracie Combatives logo. Also, "Gracie Combative Jiu-Jitsu" is close enough to Gracie Combatives to find infringement under a "likelihood of confusion" standard, or trademark dilution. If he put this up on his site to attract students then he is definitely using their mark in commerce as required to find liability under the Lanham Act.

If Rorion wanted to lawyer up, which would be far from surprising, he could wreck him.

^Isn't Rorion a lawyer himself? Does he really need to pay $300 for a standard letter that he can draft himself?

I think he meant $300/hr. The lawyer will also need to "research" (read: take his sweet time doing God knows what to achieve higher billable hours) for a few hours, so the actual legal bill would likely be much higher.

He could write a cease and desist letter on his own, that would probably end the matter quickly. The guy would likely be broken by legal fees alone (quickly) if he tried to fight.

everybody stop complaining. these post always come up and nobody does $hit..by the way i love the guard break video

ChimairaGT sound like IP lawyer

im pretty sure. as in 1000000 percent sure that rorion has a few lawyers that train there that would most likely write up the letter for free and do whatever for free.

shit. i have friends from college i haven't seen in years that would do this.
