Attn: Eddie Bravo - Armbars

You once wrote on this forum that the way you armbar people from the guard comes from JJ Machado, at least the base of it. You sounded like you do the armbar differently than many people. Would you like to talk a bit more about this? You've already talked about that it's all about head and arm control without the gi so we know that already.

I'm wondering if the trick is simply to always do the armbar from the "high guard" (in which you have one leg over the shoulder and your legs are crossed). I saw you do one of those on a video clip I found on the net. Personally, I can pretty much NEVER pull off the armbar from the guard in no-gi without going to the high guard first - otherwise it becomes too much of a tug-of-war on the arm.

In fact, I've noticed that almost every armbar I've ever seen from the guard in MMA competitions is done by either going to the high guard or by quickly putting the leg on the shoulder before going over the head.

Can you give me any good advise for my armbars from the guard, Eddie?

If anyone else wants to chime in, it would be most appreciated!

jonpall.

Put your opponent on his back first, control him, then take the arm.

Dont go to the guard in the first place....learn to sprawl. LOL
