Marcos Avellan, Humblefighter, you know him and you have cornered some of his recent underground fights. they were going to release them on a DVD months ago. what happened, and when do we see our new kimbo fights? i heard some of them were pretty awesome.
and no, i'm not a kimbo worshipper, and i don't think he's some some kind of top pro. but he is one hell of an entertaining, tough as nails fighter and i wouldn't mind seeing more of his work. he has been training with Marcos Avellan at FFA, and probably has a whole new dimension to his boxer/streetfighter style now.
kwik, I agree with you, he is very entertaining and tough as nails. When it comes to the DVD, I have no idea about it. I just know they are working on it.
i'm affiliated witht the Boneyard (gannon's gym) and they asked us permission to use the gannon/kimbo fight. gannon said he didn't truly have (or want)ownership of the fight, but he had no problem with them using it (i.e. wouldn't sue). if anyone had grounds to claim ownership, it would be him, so that left them home free.
they invested a substantial amount of time and money into staging a group of exciting fights, fights that a lot of people wanted to see, and now they dropped off the map and aren't even returning our calls.
we're just wondering, has anyone seen them lately - they work in a skeevy industry (which is why they need enforcers like kimbo in the first place). are they lying dead in a ditch someplace? are they in jail or something?
they've got a big money maker that would generate a lot of interest, it doesn't make sense to just sit on it.
just so people understand how these "fringe businesses work" - in many states, making porn is illegal, but its an almost uneforcable law, because they can shoot indoors, and just not mention the location of their site when they sell the tape.
the big disadvantage of this is that if something happens on your set, you simply CANNONT call the police because you'll all go to jail. which means that shady types can simply move in and demand a piece of your business. if they've got more muscle than you, you simply have no choice but to give them anything they want. thats why these guys run with crews of enforcers like kimbo, so that they can't be muscled, and they get to keep their money.
in my city, i see it a lot of this in the drug trade. almost every home invasion involves a drug house. you can make a fortune selling pot, but a lot of shady people know where to find you, and unless you'ree affiliated with a strong crew, they can simply show up at your doorstep with a shotgun and take your stash and all your cash. dealers can't really use banks either, so these guys will walk out with a shoe box filled with $30,000. and a lot drugs. its a profitable (but very dangerous) game.
and you don't have to worry about the cops. but you do have to worry about payback and street justice. but if you pick your victims carefully (soft pot dealers) you can get pretty far with it.
i was just tlking about the vunerabilities any "shady business" has and the kinds of things that can happen. i can't give examples of mob types strong arming porn industries in my area because porn is not a big industry in my area.
however, i am a police officer, and almost every home invasion i see turns out to be a drug house, and the principle is the same.
one of my old boxing buddies, Paul Gravell, figured out that most suburban pot dealers don't carry guns, so he stopped hanging out in the city and just ran around the suburbs, partying hard and robbing wussy pot dealers. he had a tremendous left hook, and he used to just walk up to them, at a party or wherever they were, and do a monster open hand slap/left hook and put them out cold. then he would take their stash and their cash and walk away. or just stay and continue to party - what were they going to do, everyone in the burbs was terrified of him.
once at a club called WaterWorks he beat a man so badly the newspapers said that he "knocked the mans lips off". i've seen some pretty brutal fights, but i've never seen a man in danger of having his lips knocked off, so i can only imagine what kind of beating he laid on this guy.
they charged him with mayhem (a 10 year felony for permanently maiming or disfuguring someone). when they went to court he beat the charge by pointing out that the doctors had done such an amazing job reconstructing the guys face that the damage was no longer "disfiguring"
