So I was thinking lately...it is fairly known that the more of a substance you take, the more tolerant you become of the effects.
This is true with alcohol, weed, coke, caffeine and classic OG crack.
To be all PG I'll use caffeine as my example (I recently quit this anyway).
My question is as follows:
If you were to drink 10 cups coffee a day, eventually you will become tolerant to that level of caffeine and it won't affect you nearly like it used to.
It is known that if you go cold turkey for a while your tolerance will reset and you'll essentially be a caffeine 'virgin' again.
BUT, if you were to go down to, let's say 2 cups a day without actually fully quitting, would your tolerance over time reset itself to the 2 cup level of caffeine so when you went back to 10 you'd be bouncing off the walls again for a while or is 100% abstinence the only real way to lower one's tolerance?
Not even a bro scientist????
Guess I'll try last hurrah tonight when the scientists are off work!

Substance Abuse is a progressive disease. You're tolerance doesn't really "reset."
Be a 10 cup a day user, go cold turkey for six months and then re-start regular use, even REDUCED regular use, and your tolerance level goes right back to where it was during your period of peak use.
That's one of the reasons addiction of any type is do hard to shake off, and why going from substance abuser to convivial user rarely works.
Your tolerance will drop but not as much as cold turkey.
Also not all substances work the same. If you compare heavy alcohol and caffeine users, the alcohol user will retain more tolerance with the same level of drop.
