-48 kg: Sayaka Matsumoto, Richmond, Calif., lost first round to Ana Hormigo of Portugal, when she was rolled through for kataguruma that was called ippon. Hormigo ended in 5th place.
-52 kg: Charlee Minkin, Colo. Springs, lost a close-fought match against Fabiane Hukuda of Brazil, the only score and the difference in the match was a shido for Minkin.
-57 kg: Ellen Wilson, Colo. Springs, lost first round to eventual gold medal winner Brigitta Szabo of Hungary. In the repechage, she faced Monika Cabaj of Poland, and lost via hansukomake for attacking the opponent´s supporting leg.
-63 kg: Ronda Rousey, Santa Monica, Calif. (current residence: Lawrence, Mass.), won her first round match against Maria Loredana Roibu of Romania with jujigatame for ippon. In the second round she faced Faure of France. Rousey was leading with seconds to go in the match, when Faure scored a yuko and went ahead.
-70: Christina Yannetsos lost first round to Natasja Meijer of the Netherlands, by ouchigari for ippon.
