Badr Hari: "I Had To Save K-1 From This Guy"

I don't watch a lot of K-1; do they usually stop fights before a fighter goes down? Maybe I'm missing something in that clip, but it didn't really look like a 'beat down' or 'man handling.' He got hit with a punch that dropped hiim and then a kick that put him on the ropes and the ref stopped it.

Watch the slow mo replays.  If there were no ropes there he would have gone down, he was out on his feet.  They also air on the side of caution in the GPs.

 k, thanks for explanation(s), I appreciate it.

I think Alistair was done under these kind of tourney and he kinda knew it

Badr doesnt train MMA and didnt come from an MMA background.

And yet he's got an MMA record on Sherdog.

 LOL.

You are talking about an MMA fight he had when he was 17, when he stepped in for a friend last minute and hadnt trained MMA a day in his life.

I wan't saying he didn't suck at MMA (he does), I was only refuting him not having a background in it.

He doesnt have a background in it, he took a MMA fight on a days notice at 17 years old, training only muay thai before and after.

My whole point is that Overeem has a strong background in kickboxing, he started training in it and continued to do so throughout his whole career with some of the best K-1 fighters, he has trained nothing but K-1 for the past year.

Trying to compare Badr's mma background to Overeem's kickboxing background is totally retarded and thats all I was getting at.

I couldn't believe how much people hated Overeem. The way the crowd started celebrating the 1st knockdown was something but then the way the announcers celebrated the victory was over the top.

It was all about the K-1 vs MMA angle that was being hyped.  Overeem talked a lot of shit, everyone bought into it.

MMA fighter Schilt that started as a kickboxer and has trained nothing but kickboxing for years with K-1 best team.

Pretty sure Remy Bonjasky won the 2008 GP. Schilt doesn't have 4 in a row...

Although, just by having four he's up there with Hoost.

Schilt has more MMA fights than he does kickboxing fights, he was fighting in Pancrase in 1996, years before he ever competed in kickboxing. He had two MMA fights last year.

This thread is turning into a nightmare for Ecky.

Semmy never came out and trashed K1 like Overeem did....

Just because they fight in mma matches that does not make their style "mma".  Both Semmy and AO are primarily kickboxers...their style and most of their training.

Schilt started out as a karate guy, that ventured into Pancrase because of his friendship with Bas Rutten and Chris Dolman.

The fact remains he started out as a standup fighter than has been training nothing but K-1 rules fighting for years and despite not training at the main GG gym, as was mentioned, he is still part of the team and trains with them from time to time, not that it matters because he hasnt trained MMA for years.  He was always better suited to K-1 than MMA, seeing as his strength in MMA was his standup.

I find it funny that some of you lot get so hung up on this K-1 vs MMA talk.  Semmy is a Dutch fighter who specializes in standup, who gives a shit if he has more MMA fights, he comes from the no.1 HW kickboxing country on the planet and hasnt trained MMA in years, calling him an MMA fighter is stupid.

GladiatorGannon - This thread is turning into a nightmare for Ecky.

 Not at all.

I stated that Overeem started out as a kickboxer and trains with K-1's best team every single day therefore trying to compare him fighting in K-1 to Badr fighting in MMA doesnt make any sense, regardless of Badr's 7 year old MMA fight.  Overeem's background is straight up kickboxing, as is Badr's.  One MMA fight on a days notice when he was 17 and already training muay thai for 10 years doesnt change that whatsoever.

I could play a one off game off table tennis tomorrow with no table tennis training, but I wouldnt go around saying I have a background in it.

End of the day Overeem and Schilt come from striking backgrounds in the no.1 HW kickboxing country in the world and are both in the top K-1 team.  Calling them MMA fighters as a way to discredit K-1 is silly and that has been my whole point all along, we can nitpick that Schilt wasnt a kickboxer but a Karate fighter, the point remains the same.

Uh for people claiming Overeem talked bad about K-1.

Maybe you are just in denial or forgetting but Badr Hari was the one who originally started all this when he challenged all MMA fighters after the Overeem vs Crocop bout
