I am currently a 3L, I live in California and am looking into Bar prep courses. The majority of the students at my school are enrolled in BarBri. I am tempted to do the same, but it costs about $4,000. I've heard of other programs that are highly rated, but don't have any real leads. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks.
Take the Barbri, that's what I did (Ohio) and passed. You are competing against the other test takers so you want to be on the same playing field as them. You will do well on the essays and feel like you bombed the multistate. Who cares if it's $4,000 and you fail. Having to study and retake the test would really suck. Conversely you could just talk to someone that took barbri before and get their study outlines as those are all you really need.

depends on how disciplined you are..if you are disciplined and can stick steadfast to a study plan, going to barbri wont add that much imo

if you mean bar/bri books, then yes you are correct. the lectures really arent necessary, although a handful of them and the corresponding handouts are really good and do save you a lot of time. but there are dozens of bar prep books and they are basically all shit, especially anyhing by kaplan(kraplan). like fake pie said, basically everyone uses bar/bri, so youd be dumb not to do the same.

Doing anything else is just making it harder on yourself for no good reason whatsoever... unless you just want to say "I didn't take bar/bri and I did just fine! Blah blah I'm so special."

I took Bar/Bri - didn't even open the books, just did the lectures and studied my notes.
Also I signed up as a rep my first year so the course was FREE - I recommend it that way to anyone who can do it.

You can just buy the barbri books. You can even get them used. There is simply no reason I can conceive of to do anything else.
The lecture outlines are all you need. You will know all of the essays and will feel like you know none of the mbe portion but that's the bar exam for ya. 
I like barbri's MBE software. I did every question available on it and I killed the MBE. My practice scores just kept getting better.
