Hiroshi Umemura (ALIVE Komaki) def Baret Yoshida (Grappling Unlimited): judge's decision. (Point:0-0, Advantage:3-3)
....even though Baret doesn't train with the gi (I think) I'd still say this is an upset. Don't know who Umemura is.
damn it!!! I hate when Baret Losses.
Damn! Details on that HP. What submission and when?
In training at relson's during the 96' Pan ams.Took his back I believe.
footage of that fight?
it was practice.
didn't Shaolin and Baret start BJJ around the same time? so wouldn't Shaolin have been a blue belt or purple around that time too?
Shaolin was a Brown Belt in 1996.
practice is practice
practise counts for nothing
While I don't think getting tapped in practice is a big deal, I dont like when people say it means nothing and counts for nothing. If practice meant nothing, why would we do it for so many hours a week? It's our chance to work on and improve our game, so it means a whole lot. Just know that getting beat in practice by a teammate should mean very little inside the dojo since you are both there to help each other, and it's very difficult to improve without getting tapped now and then.
Anyways, its a big surprise for a big name guy like Yoshida to lose to somebody I haven't heard about it.
Umemura is either a purple belt, or was recently promoted to brown. Less than a year ago, he was submitted by triangle in an MMA match by a guy who isn't even close to Baret's level. And it's not like the dude landed a lucky triangle. Umemura had to escape two close triangle attempts before finally submitting to the third.
This is a HUGE upset.
Amazon Sugie and Taisho also both lost in the same event. I'd consider those upsets as well.
The fact that Baret didn't tap him is shocking enough.
As for the decision, in BJJ, if the score is even, and advantages are even, the guy on top almost always wins the decision. Considering Umemura is a better wrestler than Baret, and the fact that Baret likes to pull guard whereas Umemura doesn't, it's safe to assume Umemura had top position, and thus won the decision based on that.
Dont matter. Either way Baret is still the man.
"When Relson took Baret to Brazil as a blue, he tapped out everyone Brown Belt and under at Gracie Barra."
Whoa.
His no gi guard is just sick...
damn, hes 1 of my favorites. I'd like to see a rematch in no gi
The way I heard the baret/shaolin story was that baret caught him but shaolin didnt know who he was and just figured it was any old blue belt... than he said hold on while i put on my competition gi and baret left the room.
Wouldn't Relson take someone to Gracie Humaita not Gracie Barra?
