Barnett: Catch or BJJ?

Jesus Quintana -
dermotfix - Josh, Erik. Come one on now. Come out of the closet.
Stop this BS.
The art you practice is BJJ.

If it wasn't for UFC1 and GJJ, only history buffs would know of this collar and elbow wrestling you claim to be purveyors of. It's one step away from eye gouging.

royce, renzo, Come one on now. Come out of the closet.

stop this bs.
the art you practice is judo.

if it wasn't for public libraries and library books you wouldn't even know what a triangle is.

Beautiful post!

Kano, Yoshida, Come one on now. Come out of the closet.

Stop this BS.

The art you practice is Wrestling.

See how this line of thinking always ends?

There were guys doing leglocks on the fucking Pyramids. Greeks were snapping limbs before anyone ever put on a Gi.

HereWeAre -
thesleeper - Or, Barnett is just plain better at takedowns. Barnett would probably school Werdum in a straight grappling match.

Pfft Barnett competes in local tournaments against journeymen and Werdum has won ADCC.

Get out of here with this bullshit.

Jake88 - ^^^^

Josh Barnett won the no-gi world championships and the gracie open in 2009.
LOL...rapefail.

Barnett is clearly a wrestler. He may have BJJ idea's and stuff in his repertoire but his base is clearly wrestling.

thesleeper - BJJ emphasizes the bottom game (newaza) more than any other style.

Catch does not. It emphasizes the top game and takedowns, like wrestling.

Despite their roots in submission wrestling, I am sure both Erik and Josh would rather call what they do japanese ju-jitsu (JJJ) before they would call it BJJ.
No, Josh has come on THIS site and made it clear that he is and calls himself a Catch Wrestler. This was when Joe Rogan, Eddie Bravo, and the Brazilian Jonestown Juidoka cult were saying Catch didn't exist and it wasn't real. Josh came on and bitchslapped everyone.

On top of that in the ring tonight he was announced as being a Catch Wrestler. Why can't you guys just accept it?

Is BJJ Judo because there's some Judo in it? Do people say Maia is a BJJer or his BJJ is influenced by wrestling when he shoots for a takedown. Stop the insanity please.

Waaah waaah waaha, it's BJJ waaah waaah waaah it's wrestling

WHo tthe fuck cares?

ChaosOverkill - Waaah waaah waaha, it's BJJ waaah waaah waaah it's wrestling

Apparently you. No one held a gun to your head and made you post. There are lots of other threads.

Some of us pick a topic and discuss it...because...um....were on a forum and you...um do that kind of thing.

THe level of discussion was getting crybabyish felt like doing that

little drunk, carry on

Ausgepicht, I wasn't really advocating for Catch to be called JJJ.

Genious - NJPW

Jesus quintana. What he said.^ Phone Post

Njpw? Phone Post

New Japanese Pro Wrestling?

LOL at Catch being closer to JJJ than BJJ.

Sorry folks. It's still true no matter what side you're on.
You'd all think submission videos were found in the fetish section if it wasn't for BJJ and the Gracies.

And Catch-Wrestling (or catch as catch can wrestling) would be unheard of and found only in old library books.

If you don't believe that modern day CW revivalists are biting on Gracie style, you're fooling yourself.

Let me know when Josh tries to sharpen his submission tools in a CW tourney.

thesleeper - New Japanese Pro Wrestling?

 Close. New Japan Pro Wrestling.

 AMC Pankration.

All I can say is that if Josh used catchwrestling last night then he is using the same stuff taught in bjj. It is the same exact thing. It was basic bjj top game that every blue belt should know. I'm not saying he was not using catch but I have never seen any old video footage of Karl Gotch where he used a game similar to the game Josh played last night, however I've seen plenty of old bjj videos showing that exact game that were recorded pre ufc 1. Maybe bjj has had a bigger impact on Josh's game than what he is saying or even realizing.

As far as the shit that Frank and Mauro were explaining about the difference between what Josh was doing and what BJJ is, that was ridiculous. They were saying that catch looks for subs without focus on position but Is that what Josh did? They also said that Josh explains it as BJJ being the gentle art and catch is the violent art or something like that. Well as I said what Josh did last night was the same exact thing as bjj so whether you want to label it as gentle or violent is irrelevant. It was the same thing.

Top ten moves of Karl Gotch.

Saying you got a BJJ blackbelt and then confusing everyone by also saying that you don't have training in BJJ ... that's the kind of stuff that makes everyone question what you say and your credentials.

This is typical with most catch wrestlers. Take for example , Melancon , uhmmm I mean , Melanson.

Note that it STILL says Xtreme Couture - Neil Melanson Head Jiu-Jitsu Coach , even after Neil made the assertion that he is ACTUALLY a catch wrestler . Also remember that Neil himself said that he was a jiu jitsu expert before hand and that he actually trained in jiu jitsu.

His site mentions this correction in his bio.

"Neil Melanson is a Catch Wrestler, and leg lock and triangle specialist who trained under Gene Lebell, Gokor, and Karo Parisyan. In addition to being Parisyan’s grappling coach and training partner, and he trains day-to-day students and numerous professional fighters."

Then right underneath that section - the training description - it says

"Our members here at Xtreme Couture know our head Jits guy (Neil Melanson) as a coach who knows the science of Jiu Jitsu.

Melanson dedicates his time to his students and constantly works on perfecting his teaching skills. Instead of simply focusing on how techniques are done, he also teaches why they work and how they fit into the bigger picture.

PUBLIC CLASSES TAUGHT:
• Jiu-Jitsu (Beginner , Intermediate, Advanced)
• Private Lessons

AMATEUR MMA TEAM COACH:
Neil currently trains and works with our amateur team - Advanced classes.

PRO MMA TEAM:
Neil helps fine tune pro MMA fighters like Randy Couture who continues to improve their skills and technique.
"

EVERYTHING taught in his gym is ACTUALLY JIU JITSU!

What the fuck is going on here? He calls himself a catch wrestler but he teaches Jiu Jitsu?

thesleeper - Well there is an obvious difference between what Barnett did tonight and what Werdum did tonight.

There was a difference between what Bigfoot Silva and what Werdum did too.

It's called achieving dominant position. A strategy that is bjj.
