Wife and I are talking about redoing our master bathroom. Everything is original (20 years old) except the shitter that I put in when we bought it 2 years ago. We want to gut it and then change it up some. Remove corner jet tub and replace it with a normal jet tub. Remove shower and replace with a larger tiled shower. Take out large window and move it over some and replace with a smaller window. Take 2 sink vanity and make it a single sink with some counter space on the sides. Fill in extra space with as much storage as possible. Replace laminate floor with a tile floor.
How much do you think we need to budget for this project? I am thinking we need at least $10,000. Is that enough or should I budget more?
10k is a good number, expect it to run around 12k though.
How much would it save if I did the tear out myself? Would it be enough to make it worth while?
Are you doing any of the work yourself? That shower done right with decent hardware will chew up a large portion of that 10k
Are you doing the work ? Or are you hiring someone ? Even if you are doing everything it will cost at least 10,000 . If you hire someone it will be a lot more .
I agree with jsteven .
DO NOT go down to a single sink!!!
you will be forever listening to her yap about wishing she had her own sink.
Happened to wife & myself when we sold our house with a 6' dual sink vanity. New house had a 8' single basin(rediculous I know) that had plenty of storage but shared sink. Never went a week without her complaining about it.
Get Toto Entrada for the toilets($200, and the highest possible Map score for flushing) and a Toto Washlet for the seat. It will be the best investment that you can do in your bathroom and will be your favorite too.
If you are willing to spend more on the shitter, get a Toto with Sanagloss.

The average demo for a bathroom is around 1000
I also agree with using Toto products, Grohe is awesome too.
For lavatory faucet, stay away from high end shit like Grohe and Rohl, ridiculous costs to fix. Stick with Delta or Moen, much cheaper cartridges and other parts.
...but regardless of what you decide on, buy from a plumbing supply house NOT Home Depot or lowes. Again, do NOT buy any item in the remodel from Home Depot or lowes.

How dare you shit on me!!
GenErick - I also agree with using Toto products, Grohe is awesome too.Grohe can be really nice, but parts can be stupid high and may be hard to find. But if money is no object now or in the long run, Grohe is sweet, but can be on the feminine side.
On an unlimited budget, I'd go Rohl.

I just installed a Grohe package in a bathroom that only cost 700 bucks.
I spent 12k on a bathroom remodel earlier this year and I did all the labor except for installing a custom vanity and installing a glass shower door/panel
GenErick -Lol, Grohe is nice. But home owners crap when they hear that their precious higher end faucet needs a $100 or much much more cartridge to fix it. Not counting the plumber's mark-up. Or if some random part shits out, it can take some time to get in. My plumbing supply house is a Delta and Pfister dealer, but we deal will all types except mobile home products. And damn near weekly we see home owners crap themself when they need a $60 Moen positemp cartridge and the Moen removal tool that home owner price is something like $75. The ones that come in and need a $600 Rohl cartridge often just buy a new faucet.Cire - For lavatory faucet, stay away from high end shit like Grohe and Rohl, ridiculous costs to fix. Best thing to do is completely gut it yourself. Walls, floor, ceiling and rubbish removal etc. and then bring in Professionals to do the work. Labor is where the money will be spent so try and do what you can. Also, it allows Tradesmen to see what they are working with behind the walls etc. so they only make one trip before ordering materials. Remember each time they come and go it is costing you.
Grohe offers a lifetime guarantee, No?
Ive also been using their products for many years and have never had an issue.
