Just a quick question about how BJJ belt promotions work....
Does a lower belt (white or purple for example) have the same knowledge base as a brown or black belt? In other words, what is the criteria for moving up in belts? Is it grappling knowledge, accomplishments in competition, ability to teach it, ability to implement it, etc? Is it different depending on the instructor or are there some universal guidelines? Can a blue belt have the same knowledge base as a brown or black but not be promoted because he/she cannot implement it when rolling?
I am just trying to get a firm grasp on how it is determined that a BJJ trainee is ready to be promoted to the next belt?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Just pay the testing fee and sign up for a year and they'll push you to BB.

there is no set standard... its up to the individual instructor
So in theory a blue belt may have the same knowledge base as a black belt just not the grappling ability to implement it while rolling? This makes sense, I just wanted to clarify because I figured this is similar to other sports. For example a pitching coach has the knowledge and technique but not necessarily the ability to implement it themselves in a game situation. Thanks.
i wouldnt go that far. rarely if ever will you see a blue belt with the same knowledge as a black. the thing is in BJJ a lot of the knowledge is gained through implementing yourself ina game situation. you cant fully understand without experiencing for yourself.
a blue belt could know all the moves, but knowing the moves is far from having the same knowledge as a black belt.

Thanks for the feedback, that is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
A blue belt can know all the techniques that a black belt does. Information is easily found these days thanks to books, internet..etc.
However, the blue belt/purple belt generally doesn't have the timing, knowledge of leverage and positioning that a black belt does.
In addition some instructors (and it varies greatly) look for things such as work ethic, dedication, loyalty, competition, age..etc.
Just about the only consistant thing for a black belt, is that they should not suck at BJJ, regardless of age or size. Doesn't mean they're all competition level or champions, but they should be able to explain and perform in a way that demonstrates an in depth understanding of the art.
Black in Judo isn't viewed the same as BJJ, I don't think. A Judo black is more like TMA - where you are at the point where you are a serious student. In BJJ, you see lower belts than black running schools.
"you cant fully understand without experiencing for yourself."
this
I have a black belt in a Japanese style of jujitsu and it mirrored the sentiments mentioned in the judo article cited above. I do think bjj is different than that. There are lots of purple and brown belts who although they may not be masters are certainly capable of running schools and passing on a ton of knowledge.

no there IS a standard that most 'real' BJJ instructors follow

There is a black belt, I believe at BTT, that I have heard when rolling often gets beaten by his purple belt students, however he knows more BJJ than any of his students.
