benefit of 12 sided plates? (iron grip brand)

never understood the point of these kind of plates?

Deadlifting with them sucks. If you catch a corner it really throws you off, and can be dangerous.

Just don't get it

 Hey Leigh,

I think what he means is that when the plates come down on the floor, the un-even shape can make them settle in a slightly awkward way.

Agreed, I hate the funky hexagonal plates. I guess having the build in handles is nice and makes loading easier, but fuck if they aren't a pain in the ass if you do any lifts from the ground. Another thing I hate about them is if you're doing cleans and are trying to do doubles or triples. Every time you put the bar back down you need to reset your feet because you can't just roll the weights back into position.

What percentage of average gym goers deadlift or clean?

Doesn't make me hate them any less. I don't really see the advantage of the shape for any other application. You could still cut handles into a round weight.

I actually kind of liked deadlifting with those. If your gym has a rubber floor it's not nearly as awkward as I imagine it would be on concrete.

there are quite a few brands out there that do have handles cut into round plates. My gym uses those, in fact.

Not dropping the weights. You can't drop the iron round ones either. But the hex weights, even when you put them down at as slow a speed as humanly possible will often hit on a corner. This then causes the bar to shift at 10-20 degree angle, and since the thing doesn't roll, you now need to shift your feet to compensate. That gets annoying with each rep.

I actually don't drop bumpers either. Just habit since I'm old enough to have learned to lift using iron.

I fully admit I'm a little bit of a diva bitch when it comes to my weights and how I lift.
