What an incredibly nice guy. Really enjoyed this interview again. Interesting to hear his take on drilling too. It's strange to see how many different takes there are on drilling vs. Rolling. Loving the podcast guys, professional production, good quality production, great questions, nice pace... pleasure to listen to on my way into work.
Quality *sound not production again. It's late over here!
Love how he says even though he may not emphasize as much drilling, its always different based upon the needs/style of the individual.
i spent a coupla weeks training with bernardo and he's for sure one of the nicest guys on the mats. he reminds me a bit of what i've seen of marcelo (whom i've never met) in that he's always smiling and laughing.
one of my favorite things about him was that he didn't come across as 'hardcore.' i'm sure he spends plenty of time busting his ass, but he had a lot of stories of trying to duck out of fabio's hard warmups and extra training, how he jut wanted to have fun and roll, which is kinda how i like to train (cuz i'm a lazy fuck).
Thanks for the support everyone. We're trying hard to bring you quality content from quality guests.
It is interesting that a lot of heavier guys don't drill as much as they roll wheras smaller guys tend to drill like madmen. Most people thinkof Bernardo as just a half guard player. It's amazing how much depth of technique he has when teaching. It's not just a bunch of deep half and half techniques. I think the first day we trained together he was teaching wristlocks and self defense. He's a great student of the game.
Bernardo is one of my favorite fighters to watch. Anyone ever notice why his opponents never get an underhook while he is in deep half and feeding the lapel? No one ever seems to get it on him.

I assume he keeps his elbow really tight to his body and sets up the sweep before they have a chance to get an underhook, but I've seen him hit the sweep when guys get an underhook, so the sweep works either way. It's a very effective sweep!
Awesome stuff guys, keep up the good work. You should try to get Jake MacKenzie on the show!
Sub for later.

Another half guard genius, haha! It's definitely a possibility, thanks!
Does anyone on this forum use kettlebells? After hearing Bernardo talk about them, I was thinking of giving them a try.
TTT
I thought Bernardo was using "Cute Girls" for conditioning. I myself would like to give them a try.

haha Bernardo is a blackbelt on and off the mat
another great podcast,
i admit i have never seen any of Bernardo's fights although i have read/seen his name before, now time to research this guys deep half guard game
Just a reminder that this our SuperBodyCare ontest ends the 10th!
When he gets those double lapel grips, his deep half sweep is pretty much unstoppable, and feeds him right into his over/under passing game. The top man getting the underhook doesn't seem to stop him once he makes those grips.
nice podcasts
I too was suprised at his sparring over drilling philosophy.
I just went to a seminar with Alex Monsalve and it was interesting that he seemed to be a micro-sparring, position-sparring kind of guy as well and given that he teachers at Alliance-Sao Paulo, I think the connection is obvious.
Either way, the podcasts are awesome and thanks for making them available to us.
