I know it is full of threads like this, but I ask that again.
The best instructional BJJ book and dvd.
Book: Passing the Guard
Video: Ultimate Guard Passing set by Mike Jen
Where to find them?
Thanks!
Passing the Guard: Amazon
Ultimate Guard Passing: www.jenbjj.com
Probably you shouldn't get both as all you'd know is Guard Passing!
So also consider BJJ101 (3 tape set) by Roy Harris at www.royharris.com (I think his website is down at the mo)
I think it depends what you are looking for.
Books I would buy in this order
Royler and Renzos book
Royces self defense book
Renzos theory book
Royler no gi book
Montanas enyclopedia book
Jean Jaques black belt tech. books
The first two are more basic moves including movements tieng the
belt, common self defense etc..
The next two are a little more advanced and it would help to have
some back ground in BJJ.
The montanas book (sp) is very comprehensive but I feel you have to
already know these moves and positions to effectivly learn from this
volume.
Jean Jaques book is awesome but I feel it is for someone who has a
good understanding of the game, some of the moves require good
body control, rolling moves, etc..
I have all of the above books and recommend all of them. I believe they
are all available at Borders, Barnes and Nobles and www.amazon.com
I also have passing the guard a very good book dealing mostly with
one subject guard passing not the complete game.
Another good book is Gracie way History of the art of BJJ.
I have to get Gene simcos book yet and a friend borrowed my fighters
notebook and never returned it, but I believe that was all or mostly no-
gi.
Since you asked about DVDs I would go with the sperry Master series
or Carvalho 1 to start.
Kukuk a-z is very comprehensive set, some where on white belt.org is
a chart showing all the techniques from this set. all three of the above
dvds are are at www.ultimateimports.com
I feel the best Instructional for a beginner is the gracie basic
tapes.www.gracieacademy.com
sorry this post was so long, hope it helps
Is Mario Sperry's series with or without the GI and where to find the DVDs?
Mario does both, to order I'd post a thread on the BJJ forum for the attention of Paul Viele. He often has good mma.tv exclusive deals on the Sperry vids.
Techniques of BJJ by Montanha
4 different BJJ books by John Will
Passing the guard
All available at:
www.DogsofWar.net
What about Sperry's videos? What do they concern in?
Brazilian Jui Jitsu (by Renzo and Royler)
Best BJJ book? Go straight to the source, Kodokan Judo by Professor Jigoro Kano.
[/troll]
I disagree with the above statements aout the self defense book.
I bought the book and use it as reference all the time. I think the book
is very good has a lot of sound self defense techniques in it, headlock
escapes, bear hugs etc..
If you are training in Gracie Jui-Jitsu, I am pretty sure you will need to
know the material in this book.
I wish this book was available when I tested for my blue belt because
so many of these techniques were in it.
best dvd has got to be roy harris' bjj201.
Submission Grappling Book: The Fighter's NoteBook
Sport BJJ Books: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - The Master Text by Gene "Aranha" Simco
Judo Books: Harai-goshi by Jean-Luc Rougé
Grappling Self-Defense Books: Royce Gracie's BJJ Self-Defense Techniques
You can find a review of a lot of these book on my site at:

Dino,
Sperry Vale Tudo 1 is has been, and perhaps still is, the best tape set on the market. Its fundamental, positional jiujitsu that uses striking and submissions effectively. His teaching is very good.
Sperry Vale Tudo is good for people who already do BJJ and want to learn vale tudo
I have all of the Royce/Rorion tapes (GJJ Basics, Intermediate,Advanced,Self-Defense) and the Renzo/Kukuk DVDs as well as the JJ Machado Becoming a Champion and Fabio Gurgel's Greatest Jiu-Jitsu techniques. My favorite so far is Cesar Gracie's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu DVDs.
John Will's books are great. www.bjj.com.au for more information on them.
The Master Text is also a good book.
I like Jean Jacques book, but as others have said, it's for more advanced users.
Roylers is good too.
Elvis
I have all the aforementioned books but my favorite is actually a judo book: " The Secrets of Judo" . It doesn't have many techniques per se but rather goes in depth regarding the physics (and leverage) behind judo (and jiu-jitsu).
I am looking for BJJ (even no gi) books and DVDs. I am a blue belt.
