Full results?
OK, it's a bunch of shit to remember but here goes.
Courtney Ray KO'd Tom Kirk with a mean GnP. Ray is def an up and
comer. He's in great shape. Awesome power and accuracy. Fighting
out of Louisville MMA. Pretty sure "Captain" Kirk's nose was broken.
Darron Morse beat Steve Connely by heal hook. Connely looked better
than he has in the past, but Morse was on his game and finished him
early.
I think it was Jamie Toney that beat Brandon Dumas. Unfortunately, I'm
not sure of his name, because this guy is a real good fighter. It was a
quick finish, as all the quarter finals were.
Dan Hornbuckle submitted Wayne Bogart. He showed real good
ground skills. He momentarily got stuck in half guard, and drew a
couple of boos from some TUF Noobs, but Brockmole correctly ignored
it, and allowed him to pass and finish.
In an amateur bout, Steve Davis had a Griffin/Bonnar type slugfest with
Chad Talkington winning on a busted/bloody nose.
In the semi's Morse charged Ray to avoid the standup getting him
down and worked for leglocks. Both men attempted subs at a furious
pace. Courtney avoided and caught Darren with a very nice uppercut
for the KO. Morse retired. Cool dude.
Hornbuckle and Toney had a great technical battle in which Hornbuckle
came out on top, holding mount and unloading several times. At one
point Toney took a single ant Hornbuckle did an awesome move
practically flying around to take his back somehow. He landed a leg
over top of Toney's neck and they became tangled in the ropes. Upon
the restart, Toney objected to the repositioning and ended up getting
almost half-mount. Didn't matter as Dan went on to win.
In the final Dan GnP'd Courney for the ref stop, winning the belt and a
Bodog contract. Great stuff. Wish I had more time to talk about
Hornbuckle, but I have to leave here in a minute.
Matt Troyer spoiled it for the new 145 champ and hometown fave John
Turner. It was a great fight. Turner had good standup and great
takedowns, but Troyer managed to escape and stand several times.
Finally, Turner went for it one too many times and Troyer caught him
with the knee coming in and KO'd him.
GREAT NIGHT HOPE IT AIRS SOON!
ttt for Dan "The Handler" Hornbuckle. He was awesome last night, and
props to all the fighters in the tournament for putting on a great show.
Awesome fights last night.
Just wanted to check back in to say what a high level of skill these guys
showed last night. Didn't have time to elaborate last night as
something moist and wanting was upstairs waiting.
I had no idea what to expect from Hornbuckle going in. I saw him
before the show and didn't even know he was a fighter. Crazy looking
dude with a curly blonde mohawk. His family was sitting next to my
wife wearing these "handler" t-shirts with "The Godfather" type
lettering and I was clueless. The guy is huge for 185. Very thin, tall,
and wide. Excellent grappler, good standup, and fights with passion.
He's always on the offense and it's not uncommon to see a big smile on
his face. The crowd really got behind him by the end of the night.
(Standing room only crowd btw.)
I checked his record and it's not bad at all, now 11-1. HIs loss is to
Nate Homme who is 7-1, losing only to Kyle Jensen.
Forgot to mention that Scott Henze won an alternate tourny match as
well.
Matt Troyer was very impressive and seemed to overcome the odds to
win that 145 Rising Star title. I started to question his gameplan after
he was taken down so many times, but that knee and finishing strikes
hurt Turner pretty bad.
It was nice to see an 8 man tourny end up like it should. Hornbuckle
was the only fighter to go the distance in it, but his cardio and
enthusiam was unstoppable.
Just to let you know Dan isn't huge for 185 because he actually fights at
170 so that makes him even scarier for that weight class.
Yeah, I saw he won a title at 170, and has only been fighting for a year.
I've stood next to Matt Hughes and Hornbuckle. That would look
something like Diaz/Gomi, except Dan looks stronger than Diaz to me.
