Now that another year has come to a close, it's time to look back and
reflect fondly on the good times spent with family and friends.
Likewise, if you're a mixed martial arts fan, it's time to ask: Which were
the best fights of 2007?
That, of course, raises the dangerously subjective question of what
constitutes a good fight. Is it a brutal knockout, a torturous
submission hold or a split decision between two spent warriors after a
back-and-forth brawl that could've gone either way? The answer: all of
the above. Fights are like beautiful children, except without the
innocence and purity. Each one is special in its own way, and trying to
pick the best one is like trying to win a paint-tasting competition - a
pointless endeavor that will just leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Bearing that in mind, here are some of the best brawls from the past
year, each one of which earned a place in the heart of fight fans in
2007.
Randy "The Natural" Couture vs. Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia
Heading into this match, "The Natural" was a huge underdog but a
massively more popular fighter. Fans everywhere feared the worst for
Couture, who was outweighed by over 40 pounds, against the 6-foot-
8-inch monster. Like dry underbrush catching fire, that fear turned
explosively into delight when Couture dropped Sylvia with the first
punch of the fight and proceeded to give the giant a thorough 25-
minute spanking. Slipping around Sylvia's jab, Couture took "The
Maine-iac" down at will and totally shut down his offense to earn a
unanimous decision and become the new UFC heavyweight champion.
It was a David vs. Goliath story in its truest form and a match that fans
will talk about for decades.
