From what I can tell it basically comes down to MT vs. boxing?
Boxers are better with their fists yet MT utilizes more weapons. A question is who wins in a pure standup bout between a boxer and kickboxer?

Kempo.
Honkey Style.
Come on dammit. Serious answers please.
For MMA I believe that one of the best is the Crazy Monkey by Rodney King.
It's not a serious question. Style vs. Style is sooooo 1990. It's not the style, it's the fighter and training. Keep that in mind.
with Dim Mak i could knock you out without even touching you
MT with some greco for clinch striking.
There needs to be some ULTIMATE MMA STRIKING SYSTEM where you tape pitbulls to your fists.
punching, kicking, knees, and elbows from the optimal distance and position.
Boxing vs MT = Lee Murray vs Anderson Silva
Both know their arts very well and Anderson came out on top by damaging his opponent with leg kicks and circling and finding angles.
"he closer it is to natural human reactions the better. Which is why a pure grappler will almost always win against a pure striker. Wrestling is the BASE instinct of mankind. Striking out at someone with your fists is next on the list. Which is why 9 times out of ten a pur boxer will beat a pure MT guy. I know MT guys will find that hard to believe (But we can use knees, the clinch, and the legs kicks, stc!!!). Doesn't matter. Boxing is closer to your natural inclinations."
CORRECT...especially in SELF DEFENSE situations. MMA and KICKBOXING matches...prepartion is the key...u have time to come up with a game plan...watch tapes of your opponent...look for weaknesses...and u have a time limit to work. On the MTV true life episode on thai boxing...the smaller american thai boxer manage to KO his thai opponent using a jab-jab-cross.
Everyone is different, some guys are built to punch and some to kick, knee ,elbow...ect - some guys can do it all. Don't be a jack of all trades if it will take away from something you might end up being great at, like if you really suck at kicking {like me} don't waste too much time on it if will take away from you punching training.
I believe you should try everything until you figure what striking combines best with you're grappling style.
Lee Murray vs Anderson Silva = Vitor Belfort vs Vanderlei Silva?
One fight (Murray/Silva) is not the final answer to the question of which style is best.
There are too many variables to consider as to which art is superior but I'd say that both boxing and Muay Thai have proven to be excellent martial arts systems.
I'm not trying to start a flame war, I'm just curious as to what the UG thinks. I plan to do both anyway.
There are a lot of variables, like the physique of the person for one, how much time you can spend on it etc, the rules of the fights. The styles that have really proven themselves IMO are KyuKoshin, Muay Thai, Boxing and Hawaiian Kempo(which is a hybrid of some others).
There really is no best as they seem to have strong and weakpoints, but I know most guys with hybrid styles include boxing and another of the above (most often MT). really the answer to us UGer's who aren't pros and dont get to pick the cream of the crop of whatever we feel like this week, its what's cheap and readily available. In this sense getting boxing training is considerably easier than the others above.
"who in mma does hawaiian kempo"
Chuck Liddel comes to mind
you're kinda new here aintcha?
You have my answer
MT period.
303
Depends what your skills/attributes are. For most of us who can't kick very high, I would say Randy Couture's Dirty Boxing. Seemed very effective vs Liddell in the first fight, and Liddell basically KO'd him with a boxing technique in the second fight. Couture basically showed that good defense and timing and can overcome a lack of kicking ability.
There is "best" striking art and then there is most "practical" striking art for the 90% who aren't flexible enough to kick someone in the dome without falling on their ass.
